Travelling up the A1 near to Londonderry (dual carriageway bit), I was doing 56mph in the 50mph limit, along with dozens of other HGVs, down the sliproad came a traffic car, went past a HGV, slowed a bit, then accelerated to pass another HGV, slowed a bit, and did this till it was obviously my turn, in the back window was:

50mph limit
SLOW DOWN

on an electronic screen,
he carried on up the line of HGVs doing te same.

Anywhere else in the country, he would have pulled a good number of us and fined us all, but not here, N Yorks/Durham Police.

Well done and THANKS Officer, you could have made a mint out of me and others, but you went for the sensible and safe option.
And we wonder why the KSIs are so much lower in this area than the rest of the country, hardly a scamera in sight.

this is why i dont hate the police. i think there is generally a mutual respect. if they are joining my lane, i give them a flash (illegal but accepted in practice) and i normally receive a quick flash of blues as thanks. if they are dealing with something on the hard shoulder i will pull over to L2 if possible or slow down to pass them. i have even blocked a roundabout to allow them to join and pass across my nose (it was me who called 999 so i knew they were attending an accident) which again, got me a thanks.

Since the ACPO guidelines state that fines only start at 57 in a 50, they would have had a bit of a difficult time taking action against you. Having said that they could have inconvenienced you by stopping you and "having a word".

TBH I think the HGV 50 limit on dual carriageways is as bad as the 40 one on single carriageways. In practice most HGVs do drive on their limiters on most DCs, and I for one am glad about that. Many DCs are higher standard than a lot of motorways anyway. Why shouldn't an HGV go at 56 on the A3 near Esher (3 lanes, hard shoulders, indistinguishable from a motorway except for the green signs and NSL repeaters)?

I think the police should turn a blind eye, like they do (or at least did) with the 40 limit. I realise that this was the "next best thing", but I would prefer them to concentrate on the lane-hoggers and other "obstructionists", who are seemingly in adundance wherever you go.
