From the Beeb News tonight:-

The Foot-and-Mouth outbreak discovered yesterday has been traced to a strain used to produce vaccine in the DEFRA labs at Pirbright, about 5 miles from the first infected farm and is descended from the strain that caused the 1967 epidemic. The outbreak is linked to a failure in biosecurity at the facility.

FFS! The words 'piss-up' and 'brewery' spring to mind...

While the first instinct is to say heads should roll, we do have to ascertain the facts first.

If the management have put in place perfectly acceptable precautions, and these have been circumvented by an idle or careless member of staff, then clearly the management have no case to answer - there is only so much you can do to guard against stupidity, because fools are so resourceful.

Of course if an investigation finds the precautions woefully inadequate, then those responsible should have a very good reason for continuing in their present employ, or should face some severe penalty for their oversight.

Since the work they are doing is uncommon, then replacing them may be a difficult task - and I would far rather have an experienced operator who has learned from their mistake, than an inexperienced replacement who may well make some other error. 8-)

Would you apply this logic to the McLaren "spying" business? The FIA seem to be saying that the team is STRICTLY responsible for the actions of all their employees which, to me, seems wrong.

As I understand it, it is not the FIA who support the idea that MacLaren are at fault.... Ferrari seem to be the ones saying that MacLaren are responsible because one of their (MacLaren's) employees had a secret Ferrari document at HIS home.
If their supposition is correct, then the entire Ferrari team are responsible for sending him the document.
Ferrari seem to want to win the championship in the courts instead of on the track and I hope the FIA see through this ruse!!
MacLaren's defence seems to be (from the few reports I have read) that they did not benefit from the document, or make changes to their car as a result... I suppose it might have been suspicious had they suddenly painted their car red and adopted a prancing horse as a logo!!

This, and the Sheffield United/West Ham thing, reminds me of the story where a boy called the police because his sister was cheating at scrabble.

Surely breaches of the rules in sports are a purely internal matter? Otherwise what next, LBW decisions being referred to the high court?

Pirbright worker contracts legionnaires' disease

A worker at the government research centre in Pirbright at the centre of the foot and mouth outbreak has contracted legionnaires' disease, with officials saying the lab is a possible source of contamination, Guardian Unlimited can reveal.
Environmental health inspectors took water samples from the Institute for Animal Health facility in Surrey today.

An interim report by the Health and Safety Executive this week said employees either from the IAH or the private firm Merial - which shares the Pirbright site - had somehow spread the foot and mouth virus which has infected two herds in the local area.

Good old Radio 4 bias.

As soon as they realised that Pirbright was part govt. lab and part private sector company, they were all "oh well it must be the fault of the private sector firm then..."

I've got a friend works in the govt bit who's due to come and visit in a week or two; something tells me she might be a bit busy now.

I had to laugh today when I saw the Daily Mail (no, it wasn't mine) Cartoon...

An employee of Pirbright (avec clipboard), was examining the flap in the door marked: "VIRUS FLAP".

He says, "It's very strange behaviour, usually they go out at night and are all back by morning" :scratchchin:

:D
