We're regularly told that there are too many cars on the road, that they are bad for the environment and that they cause congestion which makes things even worse for the environment. One of the answers that comes up from time to time is homeworking / teleworking. One expensive government study concluded that "If all 9-5 workers were allowed to homework one day a week, rush hour traffic would reduce by an average of 20%". Well Gee!

I'm fortunate enough to get to homework fairly often, but these last few days I've had to have the central heating on because it's been really cold.

So my question, is burning gas during the daytime to keep the house warm better or worse for the environment than that car journey, since the office is likely going to be heated regardless.

Yes, I know what you mean. When I got the chance to work from home, I moved to a lovely part of the world a long way from anywhere. As a result, my annual mileage has gone UP rather than down! I also have the heating problem but I now have a storage heater in the room I use as an office so I don't need to heat the rest of the house in the colder months.
