The Data Protection Act protects criminals, absolves government departments and private companies from protecting their clients (or indeed doing anything useful at all), and inconveniences and penalises the law-abiding.
A couple of years ago, an organisation of which I am the treasurer was given a cheque which bounced. It was returned to us marked "Refer to drawer". Unfortunately, neither our bank nor the drawer's bank was willing to give us any information about the thieving bastard who had defrauded us; both abdicated any responsibility by quoting "data protection".
Brilliant, eh?
Admittedly it was only about £16, but what if it had been £16,000?.
