Town tries out Cybercar concept

The cars are called by pressing a button along the route

A driverless car which is controlled by computer and uses lasers to avoid obstacles is being demonstrated in a Northamptonshire town.

Daventry is investigating ways to increase the use of public transport and reduce reliance on cars.

The town council believes the Cybercars, which are called by pressing a button on the route and go direct to their destination, could be the answer.

The vehicles can be seen on a test track at the town's Eastern Way.

Light track

The demonstration, until 5 October, follows Daventry's involvement in the European Commission research group CityMobil, and similar events are taking place throughout Europe.

Cybercars are designed for short trips at low speed in an urban environment and need only a very light track to operate.

They aim to take people to a specific zone where private car access is limited and would be most efficient over short distances and in tourist areas.

Daventry District Council leader Chris Millar said: "We can build lots more car parks and have lots more cars going in or we can look at a viable alternative to the car.

"We believe this could be the answer."

CityMobil is one of those biiig multi pronged EU projects.

http://www.citymobil-project.eu/index.php

We've been involved in it here, although not myself directly.

The concept has been around for a while, if I recall Cardff were looking into a similar system a while back. Apparently similar systems being looked at for Heathrow.

Unfortunately, he is probably wrong. It still doesn't solve the problems of:

- How you carry bulky and heavy shopping
- How you cope with the rush hour overload
- How you cope with vandalism

What if you have more than two kids with you and dont trust them in a second car on their own? Even if they are trustworthy enough not to mess about, what if the second car decides to take an alternative route, one that goes past the West or Hindley household, for example.

Unless they fly or can pass through solid objects, I don't see how they will have any effect on the problem of congestion. Except in the touchy-feely-bullshit sense of "it's not really a car, therefore it must be good".

i beleive the phrase "light track" means they operate on a dedicated roadway.

But that's 'building your way out of congestion' which isn't supposed to be allowed by their rules.

Congestion dosent happen where there is room to build a 2m wide road for golf carts. It happens where there are traffic lights, roundabouts bridges and utillities in the way.
Can the 6:52 from paddington stop so 100 golf carts can cross the level crossing?

This is only a solution for milton keynes! what are they going to come up with for london , luton or liverpool.

What happens when your car runs out of petrol ??

I know this all a bit quirky now, but give it another 15 years of development and things may look a lot different.

The day will come when humans will not be allowed to drive vehicles, except for special dispensation, or on a race track, because it will be considered too unsafe compared to the automatic systems that will then be in place.

It reminds me of the story of two yokel farmers leaning on the gate, sucking on their straws, as one of the early internal combustion engine lorries goes wheezing past them. Ooh arh says one to the other, them there contraptions will never catch on, you can’t beat a good reliable orse and caart.

The difference being, the cybercar is going to be a state run project which will be badly designed and neglected - then it will be privatised .....need I say more? :)
