I recently bought a dishwasher from Ikea along with a kitchen (I know! But my wife insisted) and had the lot installed by a local builder.
Now he did an excellent job only the £300 dishwasher died after two days and having spent THREE months trying to get Ikea to sort a replacement having been endlessly blagged that I should contact the manufacturer to get them to sort it I think one is, at last, being sent.
When you buy from a trader the contract is with them and it is therefore up to them to sort it within a reasonable time and it does not fall at the manufacturers feet.
Anyway the point!!
Considering I paid someone to install it and it will need uninstalling for collection (I could do it only I refuse to) and the new one will require installing who is liable for this bill? I fail to see why I should foot the bill because of a faulty appliance.
Can anyone shed any light, it would be much appreciated.

I have just read that and my five year daughter could do better anyway you know what I mean!

Incidentally we reported the fault in September and at the last call was told the new year would only be possible.
Now I have spent an age on the phone which is not free then there is my time and to make matters worse I am looking at spending the entire day of Christmas washing up due to hopeless customer service.
Am I able to claim some sort of compensation? I wouldn't normally bother but since they have been such p****s I am fuming!

:x

I don't think they'd be liable for any costs incurred in the fitting, since they were not incurred as a direct result of the fault, such as it leaking and ruining your carpet for example, but I'm not certain. You are, of course, correct that it is the retailer's problem if the appliance dies within, I believe, 14 days (the periods vary for various purchases, but within the protection of statutory rights rather than warranty) since you have a contract with the retailer, not the manufacturer.

As for compensation for being messed around, I would suggest getting in touch with the Citizens' Advice Bureau, and/or local Trading Standards, to ascertain your position. In your position I would lead with a strongly worded letter to Ikea HQ customer services (always better in a letter), and wouldn't be surprised if they offered some sort of goodwill gesture for your troubles.

Did you pay by credit card? I think before 3 months had gone I'd be informing them a chargeback would be made unless it was sorted, pronto.

I don't think the disconnection/reconnection things worth hanging out for though, appliance was sold "sale only", and unless it's an inbuilt it wont take 2 mins, not worth having some jobsworth turn up and telling you "your appliance isn't ready for collection"

The retailer remains responsible for any inherent faults in the product for as long as it can reasonably expected to last. For a dishwasher this would probably be about 1-3 years, depending on the amount of use and price paid.

Any guarantee the manufacturer chooses to offer is enforceable alongside this as an alternative protection.
