Surly the signs should be "except for access" not a speed limit...

I suppose they could erect "Dead Slow". :boxedin:

Councillor Norman Lewis, who lives close to Southern Cemetery, wrote:
I am in that cemetery practically every day and I see cars coming through.

Unless poor Norman suffers bereavement with disproportionate regularity, I am guessing that the reason there is to be a speed limit, rather than restricted access, is because he is himself using the short-cut "practically every day" on his way to and from his house!

I do wonder about some other issues with the story: Is the road through the cemetery a public highway, or the cemetery access route exclusively? If the latter, then surely a more effective solution would be to gate one end!

When did 30mph become an obnoxious speed? Most cars are about as quiet as they are going to be at 30. Are there scores of mourners staggering about in the road with tears in their eyes? I sincerely hope that there would not be children playing disrespectfully in a cemetery!

Most problems like this are caused by the misuse of things like traffic lights and bus lanes to create congestion. Take them out again (or at the very least phase the lights properly) and far fewer if any people would use things like cemeteries. Who is going to choose a narrow cemetery "road" with no pavement over a decent road with two lanes in their direction and only properly phased, necessary traffic lights? But if you stop people using one lane and introduce other obstructions like unnecessary traffic lights on the decent road, suddenly the cemetery becomes more attractive to some. It's pretty obvious to anyone with the slightest bit of common sense. We should accept it rather than trying to change it, and give people unobstructed roads to keep it to a minimum.

The "rat run" issue is just one of a huge number of side effects caused directly and indirectly by anti-car measures. So as well as those measures not saving lives (or "getting people out of their cars"), they're also causing all this other strife (and we know that in some cases the "strife" can even involve loss of life, as with scameras). And yet these measures are still being installed all over the place. Hatred of cars overrides everything else in a mad, blind, jealous rage. The amount of dogma, prejudice and unproven emotive claptrap that comes with it is breathtaking. Who will save us?

Or he could be on foot using the same short-cut.

Or keeping an eye on it as part of his duties as a councillor.

You'd have to be a real :jester: to regularly use a cemetery as a shortcut! Damn it, we'll spend enough time there after we are dead!

I think you might be a bit unfair on the councilor
he might be visiting one of his family.
Or as a lot of city people who are car based, he uses the peace of the cemetery as a quiet lunch spot.

My concern is that they concider that the only crime in the world is speeding when there are more appropriate laws and bylaws available

The Cemetery in Bowness is off a lane between two car parks - to the right of Rectory Road. see here

Lots of people use it as a shortcut on foot, and by car despite the "For Access Only" signs, because the road which joins BOTH ends is one way, and it entails a long way round on a busy main road otherwise.

The only person I know to have been stopped, claimed he wanted access to the car park at the other end because he found the first one full.
He was allowed on his way without comment.
However it IS a little narrow to be travelling at more than 10 - 15 mph.
If ALL drivers used a little common sense, I see noreason why the councillor should be concerned! Usually it is a small minority who spoil it for the rest - in each direction!!

Instead of stopping at traffic lights, drivers are using the graveyard rat-run at the busiest times.

Hmm, I wonder what is causing the problem...
Quote:
As soon as drivers see the way is clear they put their foot down.

Inferring that if the way is not clear they drive slowly.

Fortunately I don't think anyone has ever been injured,

Have they even come close?

When people are there to pay their respects the last thing that they want to happen is a car coming around the corner.

No, that would be the absolutely last thing they would want to happen. Being mugged would of course be preferable.

speed signs

Are they actually putting up a speed limit or just signs?
Quote:
Let's hope that the new signs will make people think twice before they put their foot down.

Like they do everywhere else?

Crazy. Restriction signs in a grave yard. That'll make the place look nice won't it?

iirc the on on Mitchem Road in Croydon has 10mph signs as you enter the site. I do not recall seeing any others.

So the cemetery already has "For access only" signs and people are ignoring them. I'm sure these are the kind of people who will be more than happy to observe a 20mph speed limit.

Whilst I don't really have a problem with a 20 limit in a cemetery[1] (it's a cemetery FFS) I do have a problem with the mentality that thinks that chucking around speed limits is the solution to every problem.

Just put a gate up at one end (or if there is one already there, lock the damn thing) it'll be much cheaper and work a lot better. I'm not normally in favour of road closures like this, but this isn't even a road.

[1] This is one of the few places where a 20 mph zone would be effective, much better than littering the place with :20: lolipops.
