And expect the CC exemption for vehicles emitting under 120 g/km CO2 to be dropped, given that a growing number of models including a BMW 318d now come into this category.

Anything over 226g/Km is to be charged £25 - not just 4x4s. A very misleading article.

Thank goodness my 4x4 is rated at 216g/Km (although, of course, I never actually go to London). What a pointless bit of "class warfare".

Yes, pointless class warfare - it’s the end of another part of traditional British life. I’ll miss the chavs in London in their second-hand black 4x4s with smoke billowing out the back. Soon, the only ones there will be middle class toffs like me in small French cars. It’s not right, I tell you!

what does it cost to take a real tractor into London? I'd love to spend the day driving around London on an 18.1 litre, 600hp Challanger MTB865 (especially if it is exept)!

Well, you wont miss the BMW X5. That thing puts out less CO2 than the new limit. What you will miss is the 2.0 automatic VW Golf, and the older Ford Mondeos.

This only applies to cars for which a CO2 figure is available, right? so expect an increase in older less efficient 4x4s as well as grey imports with no CO2 figure (Mitsubishi Pajero anyone)

The positive aspect of this (and the new Band G) for some people is that 1999 and 2000 cars of certain makes are going to depreciate more slowly than 2001 cars now

For older cars or ones for which no CO2 figure is available the higher charge will apply to those with an engine over 3000 cc.

Can you convert it to run on vegetable oil? Then it should count as an "alternative fuel vehicle" and be exempt.

Actually that's something I would love to do if I had the time, make the biggest, most obnoxious, most polluting alternative fuel vehicle possible, paint it up with anti-Ken slogans and drive it around London all day causing traffic jams.

Something like an LPG or kerosene Hummer, or a rigid flatbed with a highly visible industrial 3-phase AC motor filling the air with ozone and running off multiple banks of environment killing lead-acid batteries with DC-AC converters just to make it even more inefficient, maybe with a 30 year old diesel generator on there (exempt from modern emissions laws) charging the batteries and pumping thick black smoke into the air, all exempt from the Con Charge.

Surely if using an old London bus (and I like the point of them being annoying and polluting and exempt from the con charge) then the best option would be to fit a tow bar and tow a second London bus on an A frame (otherwise the bendy bus still wins the award for causing the most congestion). Bonus points if you wear a chaffeurs uniform and carry a single passenger.


Alternatively, if you want to piss people off with an annoying slow alternative fuel vehicle, perhaps one of those land yachts with an electric fan styled after a wind turbine would be more appropriate. Can you Q-plate a wind powered vehicle?

Ken will have noticed that the law worked even before it came into effect. Germans steal market share from dinosaur car makers by adapting to change and downsizing their emissions – what a novel idea, eh? Everything seems to be clicking into place nicely.

I can't wait to see all the Chelsea flower exhibitors get stung £200 a day for thier old lorries and £25 a day for each big van.

There are already a signifitant number of smaller hauliers refusing to go into London now because of the LEZ charging. At least they saw sense and have given a longer time-frame before they start charging Euro3 vehicles...

Good! Why aren't the bigger ones doing it as well?
It's just not worth risking a journey to london.
