OK- it was in the Mail - but could it be the way of things to come - first PCSOs, then various layers of wardens .Sounds more like some idea from Police Acedemy  Or some idea from behind the now defunct Iron Curtain - what next - a Youth Brigade to "Sort out " the yoofs ?(as in the old soviet countries ,and some other socialist republics, where they also "help" the electorate to vote correctly )
Crime-ridden neighbourhoods are told by the police to Do It Yourself

Details of the plan are contained in a leaked memo sent to chief constables in the last few days.
Which the Mail could not reproduce. Funny, that!

The article was a typical Mail Snow job.

"Could... would.. might..." :D

To me, (cynical moi) it's like this...

Supposing that for some reason you wanted to bring in draconian laws to control the people... How would you go about it?

Would you a) Simply bring in the laws......

or b) Engineer a situation such that law and order on the street starts to collapse and wait for the public to clamour for new tougher laws?

I was watching the news the other night, about the firemen being routinely stoned and then that chap kicked to death by teenages, and I wondered why organised crime hasn't "offered" to do what the police won't.

It's all about the political use of fear. Keep the masses in fear of their lives/lifestyle and they will cough up freely in the belief that they are preserving some sort of imaginary status quo that really does not exist. Couple this with a media system that is fighting for big stories, whilst apparently being under constant threat of official censorship, reduce the police to a skeleton crew who are stretched to the limit to perform their jobs properly (and then underpay them to ensure poor morale), create laws that are weak and pointless, but impinge on small personal freedoms that have been accepted as the norm since time immemorial, then offer articles of hope.

The real problem? It is as if our government are using one of those puzzles where you slide squares around to make a picture.

Just when they think they have it done, they see the nose is off on the right and they have to start again.

It isn't malice it is incompetence.

Like the old "Crime -together we'll crack it "-meaning - you make it difficult and the figures go down - Us , we'll just take the credit ,ta very much.
Strangely enough I live in an area where when Neighbourhood watch got up and running and started to report crime. We got a couple of keen CBO's to act,so that the figures came down (in spite of attempted intimidation), we heard the crow from officialdom "we've reduced crime in that area " - they?? - we did ?????
