Saw this in the Sexpress the other day.. Friday.. small piece buried in the later pages.

Apparently there are some plans to reduce the approaches to roundbouts to one lane affairs and place crossings at the entrance/exits of each road at these junctions.

:yikes: Are they mad? Forget the congestion .. but this could lead to chaos on what are fairly safe and straightforward affairs on the whole.

By all means re-engineer the few which are plain daft -like the huge gyratory :yikes: of the multi-lane variety.. but leave the normal ones alone.

Agreed. It sounds like yet more lunacy from the blithering idiots in government.

The stupid idea of putting pedestrian crossings on the entry and exit of roundabouts seems well calculated to encourage nose to tail shunts. I first saw this arrangement more than 40 years ago at a roundabout at Grangetown just outside Middlesbrough, so it's not a new idea.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

There's an example at Bramhall near Stockport where two lane entrances were reduced to one lane, and red strips painted across the entrances and exits which some people interpret as zebra crossings even though they're not.

The result is queues throughout the day and much confusion between pedestrians and drivers :(

Definitely not a new idea - been a common feature of roads in /around Coventry and Warwickshire towns for many years ( certainly in the 20 + years that I've lived in this area ) - indeed there's even a crossing on one exit from the infamous Coventry ring road.
Seems to be ingrained in the mentality of Midlands road planners - "Ah -there's a roundabout , how can we cause problems - Ah yes, lets put a pedestrian crossing on at least one of it's roads. " -

Think it stems from this...

from TRL article "In urban areas, this would have tighter geometry than normal"

Meanwhile on a lot of roads nearby, particularly DC , roundabouts have been redesigned to increase speed across them , causing congestion problems as traffic sometimes cannot access the roundabout due to the acceleration needed .

Isnt the reason for putting the crossings right on the exits just to take into account of the fact that a lot of pedestrians are lazy buggers and will cross there anyway rather than walk 20 metres up the road.

The other solution is to put fences up but then people just climb over them and you always get some kid who tries it, falls off and lands in the path of an oncoming car who had no hope of seeing the kid because moments earlier they were on the other side of a fence.

But yeah, it does cause traffic chaos when they do it, can anyone come up with a better solution?

Used to be called forward planning (I think ) - when a new road was being planned , stick in an underpass. Forward planning - keep pedestrians and cars apart .
