Sticky end for yellow lines that blew away
Last Updated: 1:18am GMT 12/02/2008

A council was criticised on Monday for causing chaos after it used sticky-back yellow parking lines which blew away in the wind.

The adhesive tape was put down instead of paint in preparation for eight weeks of roadworks.

But the markings, in the tiny village of Wateringbury, near Maidstone, Kent, blew away in 5mph gusts at the weekend, leaving residents unsure whether they could park on their own street.

Steve Amiss, 54, a resident, said: "They put down the yellow lines because of road works - we got a letter about it from the council.

"But we didn't expect them to put down a load of sticky tape. It's absolutely ridiculous. It's caused a bit of a stir in the village.

"And I'm not sure legally if the council could fine you for parking there. If they tried, I'm sure there would be a few complaints - it's nonsense."

Edmund King, an AA spokesman, said: "It would have been a far more sensible option to use cones instead of sticky yellow lines."

Kent County Council said they are investigating the matter.

A source said: "It's quite embarrassing really. Everyone thought it would save money and also make it easier to enforce temporary parking restrictions, but it seems it's fallen at the first hurdle."

Seems these councils' never learn or, just haven't got a clue

Money. All they care about.
No lines = no restriction.

The germans probably do it properly, this council probably used yellow insulation tape.

OTOH, I wonder where the lines ended up? if they could be adapted to work properly they'd be a very useful thing to have. ;)

Bah, I was thinking, park perfectly legally, stick lines down, get ticket, appeal, win, repeat the next day in a different street, rinse, lather, repeat, always with the same car, then put in a complaint about harassment.

Now in wondrous Warks( in the borough with the highest productivity of parking tickets by an old fashioned warden) we have a set that never got finished - on the day they were painted, some two years ago ( I think) there was a car there . To this day the gap still exists .Funny thing is that it's smack outside the local MP's office ,so the powers that be can't say they don't know about it .(Or perhaps that's why -it's right under their noses )
