School health police consider banning tea and coffee to under-16s

No tea and coffee? A quango suggested banning schools from selling the drinks to under-16s
You could have called it a storm in a teacup - if it hadn't galvanised the Government into such swift action.

Ministers were forced to intervene after a quango suggested banning schools from selling tea and coffee to under-16s.

Teachers are being asked for their views on whether a planned code of conduct should restrict the drinks to sixth-formers and adults.

Soft drinks such as Pepsi and Coca-Cola are already banned in schools after Jamie Oliver's healthy meals revolution.

The School Food Trust, a quango which oversees pupils' dinners, has circulated a consultation document which suggests there could be "further restrictions."

The document said that hot tea, coffee and low-calorie hot chocolate had "minimal" nutritional benefits.

But critics described the move as a step too far.

"I think students are capable of deciding for themselves whether they should drink tea or coffee," said 18-year-old Jack Lewars of the English Secondary Students' Association, which represents pupils.

Hours later Children's Minister Kevin Brennan stepped in, saying: "Generations have grown up loving a cuppa - it's a staple of our national diet. The Department's nutritional standards for school food specifically allow tea and coffee to be served."

A spokesman from the School Foods Trust stressed any guidelines would be voluntary.

She added: "The British cuppa is an institution. We have never directly or indirectly suggested that the code should ban tea or coffee."

:bunker: :shhh: "'Ere mate, wanna buy some Lapsang? Go on mate. It's great gear. It's leaf not bag. I'll throw in a sugar cube for nuffin'

The people who made this warped suggestion are, to my mind, nothing but low grade child abusers and should be banned from working with children.

I am completely sick of people telling other people how to live their lives.

(Not much of contribution I know, but there you go)

Mind you, Prof, it wasn't much of a plan in the first place, banning tea and coffee!

But as there is evidence that tea and coffee are good for the health, why the ban on tea and coffee? The only people I know who ban tea and coffee are those :censored: idiot Mormons! Wonder if a Mormon came up with this idea? :D

It is an interesting fact that only tea and coffee are banned by the Mormons....Coca Cola is not......go figure?

It should be pointed out that Tea has considerable natural antibiotic antioxidant qualities an has been proven to increase resistance to some serious illnesses....Its a pity I cannot stand the stuff.

:gatso2: :bunker: Then I think it's best not to tell you about Government plans to order smokers to buy a £10 per year permit to smoke.
:oops1: Sorry, forget I said that. It just slipped out... :boxedin:

Actually, I think Coke, Pepsi, etc., are banned by the Mormons, but some of them do not oberserve this rule.

(Sadly, I have family who are Mormons  )

Coke, Pepsi and all other caffeine-containing soft drinks are banned by the Mormons. But they don't excommunicate anyone for drinking it.

(Sadly, so do I)

I'm actually wonderig if there's any mileage in starting a political party called 'None of the above' who would refuse to take office.

I bet these quangos sit around bricking themselves because they haven't come up with a hair-brained scheme in the past couple of weeks and they're worried they'll have to go and get a proper job.

When I was at school we sometimes had tea. In one teacher's class we had tea almost every time, in the last year.
Even better was the hot chocolate in maths lessons though. We had no spoons (why would you in a maths classroom?) so we used a ruler instead. The cleanest one we could find, washed with boiling water.
I wonder what elven safety would make of that.

It's horrific how our National institutions (such as drinking tea) are being eroded away by the tyrants in Downing Street. But then, in a Country where it's considered racist to fly your national flag, anything goes.

Of course they don't have nutritional benefits. They're basically flavoured water. People don't drink them for nutritional benefits, they drink them because they like them. What's the problem? Presumably they don't want to ban water, which has even fewer 'nutritional benefits'.
