GEA chairman say garages should offer carbon footprint tests
Dave Garrett, chairman of the Garage Equipment Association and Aftermarket magazine’s technical consultant, says the garage trade has yet to take advantage of the “craze for reducing carbon footprints”.
“Over the last few years, customers will have paid extra for vehicles with low Co2 emissions, vehicles that incorporate an EGR system, variable cam timing, particle filters and state-of-the-art engine management systems,” says Garrett.
“The problem is that many may not be maintaining them correctly. I believe many garages may be missing an opportunity here, a chance to offer a carbon footprint health check. This could be something like a service that will inspect the customer’s car to see if it’s as efficient now as it was the day it left the production line.”
Mr Garrett proposes that a carbon footprint check could look at the following areas:
Tyre pressure
Emissions
Engine management
The OBD system
Wheel alignment
Injector flow rates
He has devised a check sheet that garages can give to customers to explain the checks and the reasons for any subsequent repair work that is needed to help them cash in on the idea. A downloadable version is available from the GEA website at

Ther terms "CRAZE" and "CASH IN" say it all in my book.
