56 years after it was decided it was needed, the Bedford Bypass is nearing completion. The last single carriageway length of it.We have the most photogenic mayor though, always being photographed doing nothing

Signed, not that it'll do any good: If we get a reply at all it will be some fob-off about how its the charities commission who deal with that sort of thing.

Not signed, because these petitions are a waste of time. They were set up by T Blair as a PR exercise in which he sought to portray his government as a "listening government", an initiative which backfired. As Robin quite correctly states, any reply we do get

Even when 1.8 million signed up to oppose road pricing, at that time the govt expressed its intention to press ahead regardless. How many will sign up against BRAKE?

Even when the vast majority (90%) of the electorate wants a referendum on the "Lisbon Treaty" - as promised (let's not pretend it's any different from the constitution) - we didn't get one.

Sad to say, but the only vote that counts now is the one we're likely to get in May 2010. Don't waste it this time.

what dieselmoment says.

I've had enough of tony's glib patronising responses, and besides, too few people evan bother. Evan the ~2 million "no to road pricing" was pathetic, what, so 28 million motorists aren't bothered, or are too damn lazy?

I was not going to sign, you make a good point though so I have.

I wonder if having to give your name and address puts some people off?

A pointless exercise because the wording of the petition is emotive and easily fob-offable.

Works for Brake.

Anybody know if any petition has received positive response?

The problem with the petition is that it makes a claim that because Brake is "anti-car" that it does not deserve its charitable status.

Just because Brake is perceivable as "anti-car" has no reflection on its charitable status.

There are probably other reason why Brake should not have charitable status. I do not think that is one of them.

It's a bit of a pointless petition, IMO.

Well, given the fact that they are all ignored anyway, all of them are pointless.
Lat's face it, the government ignores everything that people think.

Careful with those sweeping statements Peter. I am a public sector salariat (although soon not to be) and I'll never vote for the incumbent government.

Well, I have worked for the public sector for the past 18 months (albeit as a contractor, not a permanent employee, so I can maintain a strong sense of detachment).

But it can't be denied that NuLab has created an ever-growing client base who have a strong self-interest in voting them back in again.

I don't know so much.

Pensioners who worked all their lives and are being hit because they were able to save or conversely being hit because they couldn't save, as they never got a wage that was enough to live on and save.

Disabled people injured whilst working who are told: "You are disabled, but not disabled enough to receive benefits. Even though you were thrown out of your last job because you could not work and as your employer could not get a grant for special equipment, they sacked you in any case, even though you were willing to work for them."

And ordinary, "working class" people, the natural supporters of Labour who have seen their wages buy less-and-less every week, even though the government tells them that inflation is low.

They should have been called NuCon for what they're worth. :(

Which is why they got elected in '97.They substantially altered labour to be a right-wing socialist party. In doing so they fooled people into thinking the leopards spots had changed. Since then, they have employed another three-quarters of a million people in secure jobs, paid by us. They give large amounts of [our] money to unelected [re-named] quangos and guarantee their continuing source of bank-account-filling by sending the [failed] politicians to the EU to continue being what they had become so good at, failing to be any good.
Democracy has become a joke, since whoever you vote for is, essentially, castrated by the removal of power to the people who are not elected and who are there whatever party is in "power".
The only good thing to come, from Blair going, is that Mr Brown is seen as a humourless automaton who cannot string a sentence together. A bit like electing Mr Spock to be PM.
Beam me up Craptain ?
