More for information really but if anyone has experience of this it would be good for us all to know I think

I was recently invited to join Facebook, by a friend, and promptly joined but I'm going to back out of it now. I've already mentioned how prospective employers often look at Facebook to check you out but it gets worse...

"Users of Facebook and similar sites such as MySpace, Bebo,Twitter and Friends Reunited are being warned of a threat far worse than being 'poked' by dull people or contacted by an ex. Thieves are finding all the information they need to begin steal identities on these websites."

The most important thing is to go into settings and withhold your date of birth. I havent changed job in 28 years. but you could use face book to promote those wholesome activities you can't put on a modern CV.

I find facebook usefull for photos and communicating with (remote) colleages and family.

Ps Scrabble is great and if the father inlaw hasn't played for 12 hours I know he needs a to be checked on!

Thanks Anton. I guess we distrust anything we don't understand.

I feel the less information out there about me the more secure I'll be. Although I'm sure someone in-the-know could still find a way.

I'm getting paraniod in my old age. My friend recently lost money from his account when a night guard at a petrol station pointed the CCTV at the cash point to get his details. The first he knew about it was when £5000 was taken, in total, from various places in Germany.

Bring back cash eh? I make a policy of carrying only as much money as I need for the day which wouldn't break my heart to lose. In 1975 I would go out with one door key and a pound note. I'm starting to go back to those days. (Only I'd need a £20 now)

The real key to using the site safely is to go into "Privacy" at the top right of the site. Click on "Profile" and change all options to "All Friends" under both "Basic Info" and "Contact Information"

This ensures that absolutely no one other than those you have added as friends can see anything on your profile. You can also stop anyone outside your network being able to search for you via your account or profile edit section.

I would love to go cash-only, but unfortunately with petrol prices where they are now, that would mean carrying £120 in fuel money at all times, plus money for food/tolls/general stuff.

The rest of the article is just common sense though, if you post all that information up there for any bugger to read, that means unscrupulous people can read it.

At least the article seems balanced and accurate, the Daily Mail would be all "OMG! hackers can break into your MySpace and get your bank details"

This is a simple case of so-called "Internet Detectives", the net is full of these buggers, not surprising some of them are using the info for personal gain.

Personnaly I am much happier with a credit card and a tenner of cash. :shhh: I would rather the crims try to hack my bank account than get koshed over the head. If they hack my account I hope the bank will cough up.
I can replace the uninsured element, my poor head is struggling enough with out a brain injury to recover from! :headache:
