Drivers 'hit by three million holes in roads'
Last Updated: 2:19am BST 02/04/2008

Drivers have to contend with more than three million holes in local authority roads, it has been disclosed.

While roads in England and Wales suffer from around one million potholes, there are a further 2.5 million road openings made during streetworks by utility companies, a report by the Asphalt Industry Alliance (AIA) found.

The alliance's report also said that there was a shortfall of more than £1 billion in highway maintenance budgets and an 11-year backlog of maintenance work.

Some roads faced a 65-year wait for resurfacing, while local authorities estimated that they were receiving only half the budget they needed to keep their roads in reasonable condition.

A Department for Transport spokesman said: "Since 2002 the Government has more than trebled funding to local authorities for investing in their roads."

Well, if it ain't being spent on the roads, what is it being spent on?

War planes, Warships, Bombs, Rockets, Submarines etc etc etc......

Like the USA we are a military state which spends all it's income on warfare, and it's gloryfication whilst providing NOTHING for it's own people.

You will have noticed that we can't afford to fill our "potholes" in our roads. Or maybe provide a better NHS system, Maybe you want more jails for those "scrotes" who defy the law and laugh at our inability to control them.....

Build more jails did someone say?..........give us the tax money then..

Can't afford it? .. Course we can, we've just orderd £76 Billion worth (+ interest) of ICBM's which we'll NEVER use to defend our American homeland.....er....wait a minute...something wrong there..isn't there?

Europe, who generally does NOT waste this kind of money with no return is spending theirs on it's infrastructure, like roads, motorways high speed railways, power generation etc. In Europe it's actually quicker to go by train than by plane!

We are spending all our tax money, like the Americans on warfare, whilst providing NOTHING in return for the TAXPAYER, yet many of the companies that thrive on it are not even based here.

So don't complain about the tax that we're paying...........it's our priorities that's wrong about "where it's being spent".

But it is bing spent on roads, just not maintenance...

half assed cycle lanes, bus lanes, congestion-creating build-out bus stops, congestion creating rephasing/rebuilding of traffic lights and junctions, speed bumps, traffic chicanes, enviroMENTAL areas, silly paint everywhere, 5 million H&S roadsigns per mile, kerbstones designed to shred tyres... and so on...

I liked how in the last gulf war we helped open the event by firing 100 cruise misiles in the first few days... then ordered 100 new ones from america at £1million a pop to restock! The yanks can't really lose, can they? We buy their equipment then fight their wars!

And Blair now gets paid £4m a year from an American bank, what goes round comes round.

Please don't hate me for this, but the Government spending our money on these things doesn't bother me so much. At least they are helping motorists in that they are being used to secure the fuel supply (sad, but true)

What really gets up my nose is the amount of money that is being wasted on needless civil bureaucracy. Not to mention their free & easy attitude to paying out state benefits to anyone who can't be bothered to work.

This Government has an insatiable appetite for cash at one end and total incontinence at the other.

Of course I don't "hate you" antera, why should I? :) Personally though, I don't think that this small island off Europe should be trying to run in the world dominatation league anymore. We need friends now, not more enemies. Especially with our problems.

To me Antera, the government has a problem. It's trying to maintain a public service, wellfare state ethic against the wishes of a global elite who are trying to destroy it world-wide. It doesn't fit their "political view" you see. We've reached the stage now where we can't afford police or jails!

The Rich, will not pay tax, and the poor unemployed can't, in fact they're a further drain as you say..yet certain services need to be maintained. but you know, in my nearby town, there are NO jobs to be had for skilled people!...never mind the unskilled. A new supermarket recently had over 1000 applicants for 100 jobs all at near or slightly above minimum wage.

Now we all have different views of of course, but what I say is; the more you divide people into classes by wealth. The more violent the nation will become. I think that we cannot afford to be in the world domination league any longer, it's time we gave it up.... Europe for instance for the last 3 decades has been investing in its infrastructure to able to compete in world markets........we.......have been buying rockets and bombs, and built 60 miles of railway which serves only London.

3 million holes in the road.
Are 4000 of them perchance (wait for it......) in Blackburn, Lancashire? :D
I'll get me coat....

Interesting comments about skills, where all our money goes, infrastructure in the rest[i] of Europe etc. As a Draughtsman, all I can say is don't get me started :hoppingmad:

I've discovered in passing today a split in the sidewall of one of my tyres - which still had several K miles of tread on it - which will now have to be changed. I do not kerb cars. I can only assume it was damaged on the side of one of these holes.
