On tuesday morning, just as I was coming out of the 50MPH limit on the Hinkley Bypass I think it is, I went over some lines for speed cameras on the road, closely followed (about a mile) by another set, I am 100% sure the 2nd set didn't have a camera associated with it but does anyone know about the first set? I have a feeling its either the start or end of some temp average speed cameras for the roadworks but there was no road works and from searching the net there was and the limit was 40MPH, we were doing around 70MPH so I hope not.

I hope someone who does this stretch of road can help me!

Cheers all

Steve

I think you're ok-I've been down there since then and there weren't any cameras.

How annoying is that? I just composed a reply at some length then pressed the button. Now I've lost my mojo, so in brief....

Lines on road = bog-standard gatso, :gatso1:

But doesn't mean there's one there any more. Probably means there were cameras in roadworks here once and they left the ligns dowwn to frighten people.

Average speed cameras (SPECS) look different, like cctv cameras on rather fancy poles, and crucially DO NOT REQUIRE ROAD MARKINGS, so I think you're ok. Plus they are usually well advertised.

Please see www.speedcam.co.uk and click on the 'Gatso' tab, then look at the 'other types of fixed cameras' link for images of SPECS.

:)

I learnt ages ago when making long posts to copy the text to my clipboard before pressing the submit button.

Thanks Johnny,

I think I am alright, Looking at various websites I can see that these 2 camera (lines on the roads) were/or are part of some works going on in the area, I have 2 more queries though.

1 - Have there been roadworks at this part of the road recently, Its supposed to start May 08 or are they delayed, if so I think the lines went down before the cameras went up or have they been and gone, I am not sure what to think on this as the websites I mentioned state that this is a temp 40MPH zone but there was no speed limit in place!?!?!? Confusing eh!

2 - If there is a Gatso on say the east bound carraigeway and due to roadworks you get moved to the westbound side, Whilst going through the Gatzo "zone" there are no lines on the road you are safe? Is this correct?

Cheers all.

Anyone else been up the A34 recently to confirm the lack of cameras for me?

I can't believe I've lost another post in the same thread - it must be haunted :o

1. Out of my area, but limit would have to be clearly signed.

2. They need a gatso + the lines to get you. The cameras can be positioned anywhere in roadworks, they are semi-mobile...

There were roadworks there up to about 12 months ago IIRC.

I drove down the A34 this morning and thought of you - I kept half an eye on the northbound carriageway through the 50mph stretch (when it was safe to do so, of course) and I didn't see a fixed camera at the locations you describe.

Hi All

I can confirm that the A34 around Oxford (Didcot area I believe) us being re-tarmacced at night, as my husband is working on it. They 'close' the road from about 10 pm - depending on the amount of traffic there is, and have to finish by around 3.00 am so that the tarmac can harden ready for the road to be opened again for normal traffic in the morning - not sure what time though. They are working on both carriageways, north and south.

At the moment I am not sure how long it will go on for, partly it will depend on the weather as if it is very wet they won't be able to do much, if any, apparently. Husband says he could be on nights for another week or possibly 2!

Hope this helps.

Lyn

PS: They are running a convoy system for traffic during the night, so you are restricted to 5mph behind a lead vehicle!

is that the 40 stretch a couple of miles north of the Hinksey section?

I drove up last night, and again looked out for cameras - I saw the lines on the road, but no fixed cameras.

Five to ten years ago, I recall the A127 through Essex being absolutely covered with 'gatso lines' and not a camera in sight. It happens.

Wasn't there something way back about semi mobile/mobile cameras with generators -(as no mains supply was available) breaking the type approval ??

Handy

All I can tell you is it is quite a long stretch around Oxford/Witney/Newbury area as they were having to travel 28 miles from the roadworks to where they were tipping and 28 miles back again. On several nights too, they had to get off the A34 at Witney to get home (Worcestershire) due to the works and not being allowed through as they weren't being loaded again!

I cannot answer you about cameras, but my husband hasn't mentioned any and believe me, lorry or not, they do get up to quite a speed, especially downhill!

The good news is they are not working tonight and next week should see the finish of it. Not sure if it will go through all 5 nights next week, just depends on how it goes. If I understood correctly, I think they have just about finished the northbound side and just have southbound to complete next week. If I have it wrong, then it is the other way round!

Hope this helps a bit, but being in Worcestershire I am not too familiar with the area.

Lyn

Hey all!!

Well one week has pasted and nothing so far ..... Fingers crossed. I think I am safe to be honest.

Your all great for putting my mind at ease thank you all!

Here is a sceanario for you to think about.

On the M4 around J28-J30 in the roadworks there is a Gatso complete with lines etc covering the westbound side, Right now the 2 inner lanes are shut for roadworks leaving only the 3rd lane and the 3rd lane of the Eastbound carriageway for travelling West. On the Eastbound side there are no lines on the road so am I right in thinking that not only will the camera not see this side of the road but be unable to provide accurate speed recordings as there are no lines.

Steve -in case no one else has said so WELCOME -AFAIK (no doubt others will correct /comfirm ,and resident trolls will rush in to say that anything over lolipop speed is a major crime  ) no lines = no secondary confirmation ,therefore it ain't legal .
