Letter in Today's Daily Mail, 21 feb 05.
Bypassing Rights.
I asked Kent Police how many overseas vehicles are caught by speed cameras and subsequently prosecuted, and was told that from January to December 2004, 1,148 foreign vehicles were caught on camera in Kent --but not one of them was fined or prosecuted because the police have no means of obtaining keeper details. If this were the other way round and only foreign motorists were targeted, the human rights lobby would be screaming from the rooftops.
Robert Milliken Harlow, Essex.
Copied verbatim from the Daily Mail letter page.
I served in Germany in the late 80s early 90s, and was pinged twice, amazed that I got the tickets, the Polizei had to track me down somehow, I can only presume they contacted DVLA, who passed the message onto BFG registrations, who passed the info onto the Polizei, who then sent me a photo and paying in slip.
If the Polizei can track down a foreign registration so easily, why are the British Police not able/allowed to track down a foreign registration.
I was pulled a couple of years back in Manchester whilst driving an Artic, no UK number plate on trailer. The number plate I had would not fit.
I asked what would have happened if I had been pinged instead and was told the photo, showing a DK plate, would have gone into the bin.
IMHO this is blatant discrimination, what the hell is going on, we have to obey the limits in this country and other EU countries, yet EU member can ignore the limits in this country with apparent impunity.
