Anyone know about this road?

Shortly before Christmas i drove alone there and the whole road was NSL from the 30 at Polesworth to the 40 at Pinwall and on balance it made sense as even the maddest driver would realise that they had to slow down quite a bit at times (for example the 15mph bridge at Grendon) but otherwise good sight lines and warning signage.

However the next day (23rd?) things were quite different! Initially i noticed nothing unusual, but then shortly after the "bridge" there was a 50mph repeater "lolly", and from that point onwards several more. It was only until i hit the Warks/Leics border that there was a formal NSL "gateway" back to normal conditions.

On the way back, the L/W border did indeed have a substantial "you are now in a 50mph limit matey" gateway, and loads of repeaters all of the way back to Polesworth. However, checking in my rear-view mirrors, the Polesworth exit still had NSLs!!

Bugga i thought - more unnecessary restrictions :(

However today all of the 50 lollies seem to have been removed, and several NSLs replaced. The W/L "gateway" now has NSLs in either direction :D

So what happened? A planning cock-up? Illegal signage? Limit saboteurs?

Must have cost a few bob to set a limit for several miles and then remove it!

Things get curiouser and curiouser!

Just read the following article, and it seems like there are some weird doings afoot?

Inquiry after 'vigilante' switches road speed signs

Some good comments n'all (apart from Chris Burrows  )

Anyone know what really happened??

Nice to see a councillor has the guts to be honest. :)

funny how the vigalante can change the signs with 2nd hand NSL ones presumably overnight or over the weekend, but for the council to do it is gonna cost £5000.

There is an interesting contribution by Paul Biggs from the ABD here which shows how crazy the "is it or isn't it" 50mph limit is.

Also there is a mention by popmonkey in the SABRE Roads Forums (scroll down to "Mon Jan 05, 2009 14:50") but still no explanation as to what actually happened, and why three months on nothing appears to have been done about it (regardless of the supposed £5000 cost - after all, if it saves just one life ).

It is worrying to hear that:

The full article featured in the printed edition of the Tamworth Herald claims that councillors want the B5000 reduced to 40 for its entire length in Warwickshire, which is absolutely ridiculous.

I drove along there today, and there are only half a dozen or so repeaters, so if you add on four big lollies at the start and end of the "limit" (the poles are already there) i can't see why it should cost £500 - let alone five grand to "fix it"?

The only logical conclusion I can come to is that someone is in someone else's pocket.

Oh oh some one who is in the Tamworth Area.I don't use this road but I has an Idea where it is.This road probbally like most roads in the area you can drive them swiftly as long as you slow down for coners :) . Like the road between Mile oak and Bassetts pole, when there is no :40: everywhere driver. :D

Just when you thought that things had settled down, Vigilantes destroy £5,000 Polesworth speed signs!!!

Pretty p1ss-poor reporting though, as i only spotted four signs that had been "flattened" when i drove by yesterday (in both directions), and certainly none of them were going to "pose a hazard to cyclists and vehicles using this stretch of road". Also, if it costs five grand to replace around a dozen signs then i am obviously in the wrong job ;)

The signs that had been knocked down were standalone repeaters, and there were heavy tyre tracks where what must have been a fairly substantial vehicle had pushed them over. However repeaters attached to other (e.g. triangular warning) signs were still in place, so the culprit wasn't a total nutter.

Gotta buy some popcorn for this one, as i think that it might go on for a fair while
