You couldn't make it up!

These people give the impression of becoming increasingly desperate.

I await Clarkson's response with interest :D

"If we must have Jeremy Clarkson on the television, let’s give him something useful to do, such as trying out public transport or road-testing new bicycles. Perhaps he would like to drive a bus; he’d find it just as much fun as a Ferrari."

So - in the next series - the Stig takes a bus round the track

I'm sure a lot of mileage could be made of that :P

BBC schedules and replaced with a new programme promoting “sensible driving in sensible vehicles”.

I wonder what the viewing figures would be if they did. Probably less than the T2000 website daily hit rate..

My wife loves the program. I also seem to remember that half the stars in the reasonably priced car are women.
There are a large proportion of women in the audience.

Whats next, Make the BTCC competitors obey the highway code.

Perhaps they should replace it with "Men and Motors" far more sensible.

I have sent an e-mail to TopGear (top.gear@bbc.co.uk). Thought they should know..

Anyway I prefer "Pimp my ride" and "American Hot Rod"..

Good news

It is about time Top Gear were stirred into taking on these strange folk and the rest.

This could be a major PC fight.

TG due to return on May 22, 2005.

I think it would be useful if more of us contacted the show. Just to make sure they get the message. Maybe a link to this site.

I actually believe the press release is potentially in conflict of discrimination rules, in two places:

Quote:
.......and an obsession with big cars, while ignoring the interests of most women viewers.

Surely .... most town drivers or .... most drivers who prefer the smaller more economincal vehicle ?

Quote:
Through its recurring ‘macho’ themes of speed and power, it fails to include the interests of most women in its programmes.

Stereotyping at its strongest.

Wouldn't it be funny if a womens rights group took issue with T2000 over this. My wife would be outraged.

Are they going to try and ban this as well..http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/motorsport/2643565.stm
I would like to know what THEY think women SHOULD be like.

Oh I almost forgot...http://www.muldowney.com/

I can't believe Michael Palin is really their president. He's always been such an icon of freedom to me, and a great believer in the right to enjoy travel. In fact, he must have consumed more crude oil in his life than any of us: all that TV equipment for his series wasn't carried on camels (or swallows, for that matter).

He's always been a big supporter of free speech too. It's amazing that he is now supporting an organization which is calling to ban something just because they don't personally agree with it. It's the same attitude that has marred human nature for centuries; which Palin himself seemed to recognise in his interview with a church leader when he was explaining why "Life of Brian" should not be banned. I was always on his side then; how can his mind have become so poisoned?

He's rich thats how. Its like scientology. makes you feel good about your self.

Check out..http://www.bbc.co.uk/communicate/archive/mike_palin/page1.shtml

That was a while ago. Not much recently. Maybe he has changed his stance. Celebs tend to go through "fads"

It would be priceless to see him on Top Gear driving the reasonably priced car around the track. Check here for previous celeb competitors..
http://www.pressoffice.suzuki.co.uk/LianaTopGear/

Does anyone buy in to Celeb endorsement these days...Just remember Gerry Halliwell as a UN spokesperson....

Suspect Palin's agent signed him up for this.

But ... if these people should not need a celeb to endorse their opinion: their "facts" should speak for themselves!

As for the programme ... my wife Wildy :neko: is an avid fan - as most of our female relatives.

As for the list of complaints....

1. Perhaps they found very little evidence to justify the closure iof the Oxford High Street - hence two filmings to try to show "the other side of the coin" and they were scraping the barrel at bit by all accounts.

2. Clarkson was up against Mombiot on Vine's R2 prog regarding the 4X4 test. He used a track and did not drive willy nilly up and down the mountain. Mombiot drew derogatory comment from most listeners that day.

3. The police stop for speeding could have been contrived for entertainment value. He was being followed by a BBC film crew after all - so if he was speeding outragepously - then so too was the whole film crew in their follow-up cars, It could have been edited out in any case. Hence my suspicion it had more to do with entertainment and a warning to UK drivers that you do get fined on the spot if you speed on the continent. Thus - education as to what happens when you speed!"

4. Given that most of T2k's claims are from the same rather dubious spun sources as the normal propaganda - not surprising he gave it the treatment it deserves. How on earth Cambs, for example, could justify a claim that over 400 people were injured on the ring road on one date over a consecutive three year period beggars belief. An injury toll of over 100 on one road constitutes a serious "red alert" in A&E and this would have been newsorthy on anational scale. But - did not happen as each member of one large family were travelling on that road on the dates in question and were not held up at all! Nor were any doctors present at the party recalled to deal with this highly serious level of injury.

Bit like the 3 recent "incidents" at Ings - that no one apart from CSPC has heard of...

It's really all a massively long winded, incredibly sick joke that has now gone too far.

On the Holy Grail DVD there is a feature where Palin and Terry G(iirc) go on a tour of the places where they filmed it in Scotland. Guess what they used to drive around? A 4x4  . i can't remember who was driving though.

I think Clarkson getting Palin, or better, one of the Steves to do the resonably priced car.

oh and there's this ridiculous article that has a go at the ABD for being mostly men.

shockingly they are allowing some support of top gear onto their normally heavily censored "message board"

Simon

The best advert for women drivers on Top Gear was Sabine going round the nuerbuering (spelling???) and trouncing Clarkson.

I'm fed up of all these lentil eating T200 and their ilk people assuming all women drivers want to drive around in some asthmatic shopping trolley car. It is also very sexist to assume none of us are interested in performance, handling etc. Heaven forbid it women drivers might actually want something with a bit of ooomph like they want equal rights at work. How awful we're not still in the fifties and chained to the sink

They also seemed to have forgotten TG show regular comparisons of journeys done both by car and PT. PT is shown up to be the shocking travesty of a transport system that it is; apart from on the continent where it actually works. This is why they don't want TG to go out as it proves the point that cars are better at travelling distances then most other modes of transport.

My wife's last car was an 160hp MG ZR. Whe has just taken delivery of it's replacement, an MG TF 135. Both were her choice, not mine.

My eldest daughter is looking to get into Motorsport spends most of her time on the VW VR6 forums. They have likeminded women "petrol heads"

Perhaps they see all women as veggie, lesbian, femanist tree huggers. Just goes to show how wrong you can be if you don't get out much.

The next thing is they will be calling for mandatory injections of Progesterone for male children to try and prevent "macho" tendencies.

My wife drives a Saab 2.3 turbo - not exactly the slowest car around, and she wouldn't part with it for the world.
It's the big boot, you understand :P

Cheers

They did road test 24 hours in the latest Smart Car....that's testing a "green" car with attitude and they did point out that there was some values for money and it handled corners cery competently

As for "sensible" vehicles - my cars are "sensible" Am a family man! :P Breed like :neko:s!

But .. you can only say so much about a Micra ....and none of it would fill a 30 minute slot anyway - let alone the current one hour format.

It's a programme about cars - majority you see on the road are "sensible" cars as we all buy within our personal budgets. The focus on the glam cars is "escapism" in the same way as the holiday programmes give a virtual visit to glam resorts.

It is not a programme about public transport anyway It would be a waste of time to spend time recommending one bus service against another given number of buses, companies and regions - and rather doubt the viewing majority want to know about bicycles - and the only exciting thing about our bikes is the sight of my wife pedalling away in front of me  (She was on form on our recent holiday...) Not much mileage in a discussion about performance and gadgets for a pushbike ...perhaps a one 40 minute programme would cover most of the essentials. Differences in frames and race techniques? Agree that does not seem to be much coverage of cycling races - which reflects the general lack of interest as well. At least we do get coverage of F1 on the telly

Most of the tour ideas are covered in the holiday programmes anyway.

I got my pro TG message past the evil T2000 moderator and onto the site! I like their piece where they say Top Gear should be called Third Gear and promote sensible driving. Are they being ironic? After all they don't like any of the advanced drivers groups or indeed Safespeed. :banghead:
