Joe Cole Guilty Of Speeding At 105mph
England and Liverpool football star Joe Cole looks set to lose his driving licence after he was found guilty of speeding at more than 100mph.
The 28-year-old was clocked driving his Audi A4 at 105mph by a police laser gun on a dual carriageway in Surrey, in November 2009.
The striker, who already has six points on his licence, is expected to receive a driving ban when he is sentenced later.
Cole, who was sent off on his Liverpool league debut at the weekend, did not attend Staines Magistrates' Court to hear the ruling.
He had denied the charge, with his lawyer Dean George claiming in court the speed gun had been used incorrectly to produce an inaccurate reading.
But District Judge Clive Wiles found the police's case to be proved.
Andrew Mitchell, who has since retired from Surrey Police, told the court he saw Cole's car being driven at high speed towards him on the A3 Esher bypass at Claygate, Surrey.
He told the court: "I estimated it to be in excess of the 70mph speed limit.
"My estimate was confirmed when the laser, when shone on the vehicle, recorded a speed of 105mph."
The court also saw a recording of the incident, which appeared to show Cole smiling as he drove past the police officer.
Mr George works for Nick Freeman, the lawyer nicknamed Mr Loophole who specialises in speeding cases.
Cole will have to pay £600 costs, the court heard. The sentence was adjourned until August 27.
