It's All In The Figures

The Department for Transport has published National Statistics for traffic in Great Britain, including analyses by vehicle type and road class, for the fourth quarter of 2004 and 2004 as a whole.

The provisional figures indicate that esitmate traffic levels rose by 2.3% between the fourth quarters of 2003 and 2004. Traffic is estimated to have risen by 1.7% between 2003 and 2004 as a whole. This continues the estimated growth rate of between 1 and 2% per annum since 1999.

Other key results include (provisonal 2004 annual figures) Comparing 2004 with 2003 as a whole.

* Car traffic was 1% higher

* Light van traffic increased by 5%

* Goods vehicle traffic was 2.9% higher

* Motorway traffic rose by about 2% between the fourt quarters of 2003 and 2004:

* Car traffic rose by 2%

* Light van traffic was six% higher

* Goods vehicle traffic rose by 5%

* Traffic on motorways rose by 5%

If these figures are accurate then I think that the green anti-car PC lobby are wasting their time campaigning against the evil internal combustion engine.

The departures from the line are mostly to do with economic conditions. You can see the 1973 oil crisis, the late 1980s economic boom and the early 1990s economic bust for example. But we soon get back to the normal pattern of growth.
