Driving through Sussex/Surrey today in a well loaded Transit, so no overtaking. Stuck behind a Boxster (some Trophy wife type, not trying), who in turn was stuck behind an archetypal 45-everywhere driver in an Astra. After a fair few miles we entered a village (Fernhurst I think) down a steep hill past a :40: speed camera.

The 45 Numpty continued straight past it at 45 and it went off.

I got a lift the other day with someone who turned out to be a 40 everywhere driver! I found myself willing the driver to get up to a decent speed in the NSL bits and then found myself presing my imaginary brake pedal a fair bit when we got into town! Quite unnerving! I bet your 40-everywhere was a respectable middle class type who is "in favour of speed cameras" and despises "boy racers" for their "dangerous" antics  They're usually the most outraged when they get a bill for £60 and 3 points!

This is a classic, she runs into the back of someone and then goes on to criticise all the other "bad" drivers on the road for wanting to go faster than her. Usual sad comments from the other armchair driving "experts" too.

It is tragic that some drivers consider themselves safe due to a set speed. It is recognising hazards and choosing appropriate speeds for those conditions. Many good drivers go far 'slower' and 'faster' as they adjust to suit conditions appropriately.
Are drivers becoming 'confused' as to what is right, and so try to 'simplify' the speed issue and select a medium speed regardless - awful behaviour and this is seen all over the Country as people have been turned off to actually thinking about their driving than to engage with it - so helped the bad drivers get worse !

"I had nowhere to go". One of the basic principles of good driving is that you always have "somewhere to go" whatever happens - that's the S in COAST.

And, as for a "sudden rush of overtaking", if she is as old as she implies - and the picture rather belies it - she would be aware that overtaking used to be a very normal activity. But one that has been greatly depreciated in modern driving instruction. If my son is typical, a recently qualified driver regards overtaking as a very daring and dangerous manoeuvre - which is probably why so many do it so badly and resent anyone overtaking them.

To be fair - some of the comments are very critical of her.

Amusingly, the Astra turned into a side road in the same village, so highly likely they actually lived there too!
