Motorists in remote areas may be given a discount on the cost of fuel under plans being considered by the Government, Treasury Chief Secretary Danny Alexander says.. Skip related content

There is increasing pressure for the Government to take action to reduce the burden on motorists faced with increasing prices at the pump, with ministers considering introducing a "fair fuel stabiliser".

Mr Alexander said the Government was also taking steps to introduce a "discount scheme" for drivers in remote communities who depend heavily on their cars but are faced with higher fuel costs.

David Cameron has indicated that a fuel duty stabiliser was being examined, although Mr Alexander acknowledged there were difficulties with the plan.

The concept of the fuel stabiliser is to peg fuel duty to the price of oil so that when the price of oil goes up the proportion of tax goes down, and vice versa, maintaining a steady price for consumers.

The Chief Secretary told BBC1's Politics Show: "We as a Government are looking at the idea of the fair fuel stabiliser, as the Prime Minister has been saying.

"It's a complicated idea and it's difficult to see precisely how we achieve it but it's something that we are looking at very carefully to see if we can reduce the burden of fuel duty.

"We are already also taking steps, and we are the first Government that's done this, to put in place a fuel duty discount scheme for remote communities where the prices are absolutely highest, something previous governments refused to do."

In the coalition agreement the Government committed to "investigate measures to help with fuel costs in remote rural areas, starting with pilot schemes". The measure was also contained in the Liberal Democrat manifesto at the general election.

And having sold off most of the North Sea deposits :bunker: :bunker: :bunker:

Might be a route to avoid

What shows up most is where the prices are highest .And a lot of that is down to fuel companies( not forgetting HMG looking on fuel as something to prop up the economy).
I live as close to a refinery as someone like ree.t.Yet in Tamworth, fuel is a lot cheaper than here, and there's a modicum of price competition. Localy i see something approaching a cartel - most petrol stations are tied to one producer ,with the others keeping prices in line .Few years ago ,I was making trips from the midlands north ,and in the main ,prices in Glasgow were a few pence cheaper /litre than here .Today (source petrolprices.com), it's approx 4p/litre cheaper in Glasgow and the same price in Inverness as here.Even up SS HQ way it's only 1p/litre cheaper than here ( and I'm supposed to live in the middle of the midlands ,a cheap place to reside).
Once you get off the beaten track ,it's getting up in price - but I suspect that in the sticks in England and Wales ,the same will apply,as there's not the same competition for the oil giants to bother about .

So the remote areas ,IMHO is a nice smokescreen ,perhaps another attempt to distract motorists from the real greed merchants -HMG.

Do you suppose a poor OAP in YO11 will qualify? I'm pretty remote....in a manner of speaking.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

By remote they mean the wilderness of Surrey.
Or maybe Scotland, if the rolls royce is too thirsty.

56 years after it was decided it was needed, the Bedford Bypass is nearing completion. The last single carriageway length of it.We have the most photogenic mayor though, always being photographed doing nothing

I'd have thought Chelmsford, or even Ascot   ,or somewhere about half an hour from Westminster.Maybe even somewhere just outside the M25 .
But then looking at the appearance of Parliamentary candidates during the past few elections, our council estate is a remote ,uncharted place, even for Labour candidates, and the last time we saw a Candidate for a council seat was when we threatened to put up one from our local residents association .

I know that !
Last general election NOBODY came knocking on the door, from ANY party.
Too ashamed, or too scared at getting told to **** *** ?
As for council estates.....does anyone still vote there ?

Last time I looked -yes -as said ,we had one very worried councillor a couple of years back - our association threatened to put up a candidate against him,and he realise that he'd lose out .

But if the ignorance of the country usually exhibited in the hoe counties (by those in positions of power) follows the usual trend, perhaps everybody north of Watford will be deemed to be in a remote area

AH,well-the idea was nice. Can't find the update on BBC news, but on BBC NEWS teletext ,there's two items.

No 1 - this won't be in the MARCH budget .
No2 - they've discovered that to o this they need EU approval .

Al that talk/debate about voting (I'm not taking the P ,JO, ) BUT is it worth voting any more -this lot can't sort out stuff in the UK( an this is a UK government elected by UK people),without the approval of a NON ELECTED ASSEMBLY, not resident in the UK.
