Young women drivers will also be hit hard. An Association of British Insurers (ABI) research paper claims some under-25s may face motor insurance increases of between 50% and 60% almost overnight – which could translate into an extra £500-£1,000 a year.

Men insurance claims tend to cost more so therefore all men should pay higher insurance than women.

In that statement change the word 'men' to 'asians' or 'blacks'. Cue outrage and massive fines for insurance company involved. About time this blatant act of sexism was outlawed.

The failure of the court is that they have focussed on the wrong thing. Equality should be "assessing the cost of car insurance and pensions on the same basis" and not "everone should pay the same". What next? All age groups paying the same?

Thus the better safety record of female drivers leads to their paying less while their greater longevity leads to female pensions being lower.

This is fair and equal treatment but not "the same".

The European Court of Justice has ruled that insurers should not treat gender as a risk factor when assessing premiums, clearing the way for higher costs for women. And probably men

Insurance is meant to be about spreading risk among a group of people so that no one individual has ever to pay out a large sum in damages. If you calculate the risk factors with sufficient accuracy and adjust the premium accordingly then it ceases to be insurance and becomes a form of saving scheme

Inequality.
Sigh....
Women drive less, so have fewer accidents and lower insurance.
Men who drive little have higher insurance.
Women live longer and have better health during that time, so get to retire sooner (at the moment), and their pension costs are higher because of that.
Their life insurance costs are lower.
My life insurance was 30% higher than an office worker because of the inherent risk of accident and poor health, due to work conditions.
What would life be like without these little foibles?

My neighbour and I are a perfect example of this, both 22, both got our licence within 4 months of each other (I got mine first), same experience, same car (1.25 Fiesta, ours is a year newer), next door neighbour so no difference due to postal address, both on our mothers cars, both of them have loyalty protected no-claims bonus, I have no claims and zero points, my neighbour has 1 claim (for about €1000 for a minor single vehicle incident) both of us looking for fully comp. Both of us live in Dublin so are only home some weekends.

Neighbour gets quoted €450 for mother and daughter.
We get quoted for €1000 for mother and son.

Explain how that is in any way fair to me. That is the cheapest I could get and will not be paying it so from next month on I will not be insured to drive anything.

Edit: I pay a higher premium in health insurance because I am less likely to claim, therefore the older people who are more likely to claim can have it cheaper and more affordable.

If you were a professional sportsman and your male neighbour was a trainee accountant, you would have to pay a much higher premium. Would that be any fairer?

Insurers determine premiums from the actual historic claims record of various groups, not from any perceived concept of "fairness".

I'm surprised that the insurance industry has not responded by saying that they DON'T discriminate on gender, just on RISK, so no changes to be made!

Ignoring the principle of "shared risk" which SHOULD prevail, it does not matter WHY one person/gender is less of a risk, the issue is that over the term of a policy, women as a whole make less expensive claims on their insurance companies.

However there are other more insidious differentiations made - catering workers, barmen (and women), all pay more than other trades, while journalists pay less.
WHY? Insurance companies are too slow to react to changes in circumstances, and pay too much heed to statistics without examining the root causes!
I used to work in a hotel - then I didn't. No difference to my risk, so why the penalty?

I would suggest that everyone pays a significant amount - and if they stay trouble free, get a substantial discount each year they keep out of trouble!

A snappy name for that would be no-claims-discount. But it aint going to happen.
