The EU's Industry Commissioner Antonio Tajani has been having talks with the Formula 1 President Jean Todt about the introduction of electric races to the F1 calendar. It is none of their business.
But UKIP's Spokesman for Sport, Winston McKenzie, slammed the move.
"Why not just go the whole hog and have the race circuit based on a Scaletrix set?" he asked.
"Formula 1 is none of the EU's business. It is a private enterprise of people and companies doing their level best to push man and machine as hard and fast as they can. It is called individual endeavour, something the EU commissioners would never understand. ".
Reports say that Bernie Ecclestone, the ultimate arbiter of F1 is not so keen on Mr Todt's ideas.
Mr McKenzie said: "If the people behind Formula 1 want to have an electric version, great, but that is their choice.
"However if the EU gets involved we know that the whole sport would be reduced to special pleading and politicisation. Worse still one of the richest sports in the world will start putting its hand out for taxpayer subsidies."
"Of course Mr Tajani the EU industry commissioner would love to cover Silverstone in EU flags and claim that it was now EU property, just as they have done to the Ryder Cup in golf, but in no way should the taxpayer have to fork out any money."

) I think Le Mans got a whole lo more interesting when they started having the odd diesel in the field, now look at them. We may as well face up to the fact that we're not going to be able to carry on as we are indefinitely. If we don't have viable alternative technologies when that day comes, we'll be mighty sorry - and we're not going to get viable alternative technologies without encouragement.
