Top traffic cop switches job May 1 2005
Marc Baker, Wales on Sunday

A TOP Welsh speed cop who caught Britain's worst speeding motorist is moving from traffic duty to emergency planning after a mystery allegation made against him.

Gwent Police traffic officer Greville Phillips hit the headlines in 2002 after he caught a motorcyclist speeding at 155mph - the fastest ever recorded by a speed camera in the UK.

And last year he caught a motorcyclist speeding at 154mph on a Welsh dual carriageway, 20mph faster than a Formula One car.

But this week after 30 years on patrol, Pc Phillips was preparing to join the emergency planning unit within Gwent Police.

His departure from Gwent Police's traffic unit follows an allegation made against him which has been fully investigated by his police force.

Pc Phillips, of Langstone, near Newport, is against his job switch and is currently on leave.

He believes he is the victim of a gossip campaign within his police force and says he just wants to get on with his job.

Pc Phillips this week declined to comment on the allegation made against him, but stressed he is an innocent party.

"I have been a police officer for 30 years and I have never broken the law," he said. "I can look you straight in the eye and say that."

Pc Phillips' job switch has come to the attention of Gwent Police's Police Federation, which represents serving police officers.

Wales on Sunday called at Pc Phillips' home on Thursday and was met by a Federation member.

A representative said: "If there is a campaign of gossip, you don't want that going in the paper do you?"

Pc Phillips was seconded to the Mid and South Wales Safety Camera Partnership in 2003. He is no longer affiliated to them.

Gwent Police last night refused to comment on the nature of the allegation made against Pc Phillips.

Force spokeswoman Jo McGuire said: "Without referring to any specific case it is not force policy to comment on internal matters regarding individuals, including their current state of health.

"We can confirm Pc Greville Phillips is a serving police officer and is currently assigned to the emergency planning department. Gwent Police will not comment on any internal matters affecting individuals."

Presumably the Formula One car in question was a Minardi. What was it doing on a Welsh dual-carriageway?

At 154 mph he was probably just easing it into 6th gear.... If it was 20 mph faster than an F1 car thats only 134 which is stock Golf GTi territory. If I'd spent zillions of pounds on my F1 team I'd expect to out run a £6k fireblade nevermind a golf GTi. The author really knew his or her stuff didn't they???
