We are working on a new series for BBC2 called The Reel History of Britain, fronted by Melvyn Bragg, which is looking at the social history of Britain over the last 100 years.
The series will cover a variety of historical themes such as school life in the 1960s, the home front and evacuation in the 40s, UK seaside holidays in the 50s, Teenage life in the 50s as well as many other themes. Each programme will be filled with archive footage although what will really bring the series to life are first-hand stories of people who were there at the time.
One of the programmes is focusing on the growth of the popularity of the motorcar in the late 1950s and 1960s and the development of the motorway network. I am keen to speak with motoring enthusiasts who were there at the very beginning of the motorway era and have stories to tell. This may be waiting for the Preston bypass or the M1 to open to drive down it for the first time, breaking down or even having a picnic on the hard shoulder, which was quite common at the time, or simply not knowing the rules of how to drive properly on the motorway.
We are also looking for people who had to save really hard in the late 1950s early 60s to buy their first motorcar and what it was like when they first went out for a drive. Any stories along these lines would be great too.
We are all so looking to feature people who had a sports car or a Jaguar in the early days of the motorways and have stories about cruising up and down the motorways at top speed.
