Overview
Road safety remains a central concern for the government and local authorities. Road related deaths and serious injury cost the economy an estimated £3 billion annually. As the number of vehicles registered in the UK rises and the impact of severe weather on the roads continues to be felt, effective strategies to ensure road safety will be of paramount importance.

The government have made significant steps to make Britain’s roads safer. In October 2010, the government undertook wide-scale reform of the practical driving test with the introduction of Independent Driving. This is designed to test candidate's driving skills under normal traffic condition and is intended to provide a more accurate measure of learner drivers ability. The government will also cease publication of the questions used in theory tests, to further test a candidate’s knowledge of road safety and the Highway Code.

In May 2011, the Department for Transport published the Strategic Framework for Road Safety. The report outlines the extended range of educational options for road users charged with driving offences and strategies for improving enforcement against the most dangerous drivers. The report also has a focus on localism, increasing the road safety information available to local citizens.

Agenda
This forum will discuss how the government and relevant authorities will take forward current and future road safety strategies and implement the Strategic Framework. Sessions will focus on what can be done to reduce KSI for all road users, including cars, cyclists, motorcyclists, larger vehicles and pedestrians. The forum will include keynote presentations from leading thinkers in the area and will include best practice case studies from leading local authorities.
