Now, I should point out that this is not actually a current problem, just a hypothetical that I dreampt up.

Just about the worst thing that can happen to the owner of an old house is Bats in the attic (or anywhere else for that matter), basically because of enviromental legislation they can leave you homeless.

It is fobidden to interfere with or evict bats, so if you need to do building work, you cannot do it if it might disturb the Bats.

But would you be breaking any laws by putting up Owl boxes??

Someone I know  had this problem some twenty five years ago. But bats in the attic always go out hunting at dusk, of course, through a hole in the fascia board. A hole which he noticed just after dusk one summer evening. Being a prudent householder he immediately got out the ladders and repaired the hole by torchlight. The returning bats took up residence in the nearby church hall wher, for all I knoe, they still live.

I know a guy who lived in an old house who had bats. I don't think they used to bother him but he did say that they did disappear at certain times of the year and then return (2 weeks in Benidorm probably...;-) ) You could always do repairs to any holes whilst they were away skiing or whatever they do...;-)

Many Bat Societies will help you remove them at appropriate times and help them re-locate. Placing up bat boxes too will help them move home naturally and still provide you with their munching of insects habits ! :) I love the way they fly and dart about fascinating to watch and very hard to film!
