Carrying on from viewtopic.php?f=13&t=25881.
Up to a few years ago I ,was regularly out on the roads . As a result ,i had a lot of favourite spots ,just off the Motorways where a few minutes detour saved £££££ and the food was of a reasonably high standard , but not necessarly haute cuisine .
Suggestion to the powers that be is a pooling of local knowledge, and something of a sticky . Obvoiusly the HGV /service engineers /etc will have a higher input . My criteria was always to look for the site with the highest number of Trucks parked .
To start off - M6 ,A500 into Stoke/Newcastle -good return to Motorway access . Layby parking
Old one -A34 ,into Stoke ( anyone confirm) .Layby parking - Can't remember how difficult it was getting back to M6 .
M40 - junction south of Longbridge ,layby parking - but seem to remember getting back on motorway a bit of a problem .
M1 ,J21 - no directions - but found one there recently( on elevated island on leics side of junction) . ,when Mrs B & I went to fosse park - I got my sarny in a napkin -she got a plate .

There are various books that I have seen on where to eat around the motorways and trunk roads ...
I suppose a list of where everyone knows is good might turn into a Safe Speed Snack guide ? :) Still if all the proceeds ended up helping the Campaign then I would be delighted !

I've noticed Wyvale garden centrea advertising themselves as an alternative to motorway service areas:

I seem to recall stopping at the chelt or glocs one on the way down to cheddar in the camper a few years ago.

Having looked at their website I called and spoke to their Marketing Company and IMHO what was missing. I they want to really attract motorists we need to know their opening hours, how far off they are from the nearest motorway (& Junction), and their cost of basic foods and drinks.
I am never going to try one, (and perhaps have to travel 6 or more miles off the motorway) only to find that it is too expensive, or shut !
Reading the overall map was hard for some numbers, (as they overlapped lines - so badly presented), and it came across to me as a hint of an idea, than any real alternative, unless one happened to be passing and happened to want to visit a garden centre.

Well -we've got the numbers- and truckers - if all contribute - then I'd suppose that a lot of places might be willing to be in the SS Snack guide - good for business .

If you had asked me a few years ago I would have said Dobbies on the way to Oswestry. It’s a relatively regular route of mine, but the last time I went there I was so shocked at the price and disappointed with the child-proportion size meal I vowed that would be the last time. (And it was).

I always used it as a ‘not cheap treat’ but now it’s become obscene. So I’ve gone back to layby Larry sweating on my bacon with the public toilet across the road about three bushes down. :whome: (I use wetwipes and have hand gel in case you're wondering).

I also priced up the cost of 100g container of mealworm in the pet section for my feathered friends which I can get from Wilkinsons on offer for about £1.86. Dobbies price was £6! Talk about a mark up!

Can we use this as a 'places to avoid' too Botach?

If you ever go down the A5 -somewhere just south of Atherstone there's a truckstop called ( I think) The Copper Kettle (http://www.118.com/biz/1902460.mvc/athe ... ettle-cafe) - haven't used it recently - but when we used to work out in the country it was a great place .Very good value for money . Mostly the bacon egg etc place - but huge plates and good quality .

I wonder if there is any weight to doing a Safe Speed Safe Snack guide but around the locations there are hints and tips about road environments and what to look out for and remember to consider ?
Considering other discussions about urban / rural driving behaviours this might possibly be an interesting thought?
I wonder if a sponsor like MacDonalds (like a free or token for all Safe Speed members?) or Moto, might be interested ? Humm :scratchchin:

I recently experimented with some mug printing and although we had some fun and games some simple ideas ought to be 'easy' and effective.

Yes, that’s the one ed. :) It’s the only one I know of, assuming they’re a chain.

I think they charge over the odds for a mini-meal just because there’s a piano in the corner. Nice place shame about the grub, which wouldn’t fill a mouse’s tummy. I counted four baby carrots the last time and about ten peas. It was rediculous! Being very British, I just muttered under my breath. I notice a lot of elderly go there, so maybe it’s to accommodate for shrivelled old bellies and denture wearers...

Yep - heading toward Hinckley(on A5), turn off for Nuneaton, then just after Severn trent plant ,turn right, and it' on the right . Used to be a "pick yer own farm" ,with reasonable prices on the produce picked ,and hoi poli prices on anything in shop. However the owners decided ( from my take on their age ) to sell up and retire - now Dobies have moved in - there's no home produce ,and anything in store has doubled in price . On one side -there's sh*t air, on the other -sh*t prices .Take yer pick .
