Is it illegal to HAVE lights of the wrong colour facing front, or only if they are in use?

I'm thinking particularly of a pair of Port and Starboard navigation lights.

Oh, and do Construction and Use regs forbid the use of a flag staff and flag on the rear boot of a vehicle, or is that just down to the fashion police?

The reason I am asking is this:

What about the whirling propulsion system beneath...

I presume it still floats... and is also subject to a whole load of maritime laws! What a nightmare it must be to keep within ALL the laws!

A friend of mine used to have one - I bet he wishes he still did!
Looks a god restoration job though!

You need the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989 (as amended), rather than C&U.

Here's a handy link:

http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1989 ... on/11/made

which helpfully contains the ORIGINAL regs (not any of the million-and-one amendments - which you'd have to look up separately, and in the right order, before the above link can be useful)!

Anyway, I'd have to check an up-to-date copy at work, but I think the wording is "must not show a XXX(insert colour) light under "yyy" circumstances" - so your navigation lights are OK as long as they're not switched on whilst on the road. Obviously that Amphicar pre-dates the 1989 regs - not sure what was there before them).

As a "boat", presumably it's a "power-driven vessel under 7m" (or whatever category it falls into) so it would need lights in accordance with it's category of vessel...

...whatever that is...

It will come under the Boat Owners Highway Code.

http://www.boating-group.org.uk/safetycode/safecode.htm

I failed to find a government link (& a bit busy at the minute)...
So when on the road the HC and then the BOHC when on water I guess will apply ! And a Mole says relevant to it's year of manufacture and all following updates ! A nightmare but how many cops/coastguard will know all the rules that are appropriate. It think I'd have to have all the copies to hand when stopped to help advise everyone ! :)

Now where's Cap Pugwash (late of HM Navy Submariners dept) when needed ,to clarify all those seafaring points . Possibly lost at sea since this one floats. :D

It amused me that link above is from Torbay - the only time I've seen one of these cars in the water was in Torbay - and it was a new car at the time :)

Last post made me reailise that another version is made locally to me .I've e3ven seen one on the roads locally, but the light ideas didn't strike me at the time. As I mentioned earlier ,I'd suggest it's a mix of maritime & road rules similar to that of the road railers which fall under a mix of road/rail rules . The rail trollies I've driven ( and that was long time ago ) ,automatically set the operation of lights by direction of travel.

The "boat" side of it will be governed by the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (Usually referred to as the "Colregs").
