I have just come back from a few days in Venice and I thought it made an interesting comparison with Amsterdam, the "Venice of the North".

We all know about Amsterdam's cycle friendly streets etc. but, in Venice, I noted:

- no cars (obviously)
- no bicycles
- no provision for the infirm or disabled (ramps etc.)
- no mobility scooters.

This is an extreme example of a pedestrian zone but I actually felt more relaxed in Venice as there was no risk of a cyclist running into me while I idly gazed up at St Marks. Can conservation areas be exempt from the EU disability discrimination legislation?

The gondola "jams" were amusing though.

Any 'canal rage'? :D

I'd like to go to Venice but was told it stinks, as in the smell. Amsterdam was lovely, must go again. Loved the museum and three canal trips, denoted by colour. Hospitality was second-to-none! :)

You will be branded a threat to society by going over a speed limit where it is safe to do so, and suffer the consequences of your actions in a way criminals do not, more so than someone who is a real threat to our society.
