Right now photovoltaics don't make economic sense when compared with mains electricity supplies.
A 150W photovoltaic array costs about £500 and will deliver energy for something like 8 hours a day 200 days a year. That's about 240 Kwh per year - with electricity at a maximum price of about 7p per Kwh that array generates about 17 quids worth of electricity per year. Then there's batteries, regulators, inverters, installation costs. The batteries in particular have a limited life and will require replacement at fairly regular intervals.
Then there's efficiency. One particular problem is that when the batteries are full and the energy isn't needed immediately we have no alternative but to lose it. All in all we'd be pretty lucky if we were able to use 50% of the total. - that means £8 quid's worth of electricty per year from our £500 array meaning 60 years to break even - probably more than the lifetime of the array.
I believe that material costs prevent huge benefits arising directly out of greater production volumes.
On the other hand, if mains electricity attracted duty at the same rate as motor fuel then the balance might be tipped.
