Anyone got any facts etc on directional use of gatsos, or point me in right direction.

In 30 limit this morning got flashed in face by gatso.Checked my speedo at first flash , not quite 35 .
Complained to police /scamerati and got call back from PC on camera duty. Technician had been dispatched post haste. Wonder if my comment on it breaching type approval did that ( total bluff)
Don't expect to hear anything else from what PC said -- but scamerati aren't too fussy how they get their cash, so i'd like to be armed with facts, just in case as this is firms vehicle, but photo would be of front of van anyway, and normal location of gatso is on pavement on passenger side to take photo of rear of vehicle.

It has been suggested that dummy gatso's are not as accurate as the real thing and that they sometimes can't tell positive and negative speeds apart.

Even the real thing has a big problem with panel vans anyway. Confusing the speed of the panel vibrations with the actual vehicle speed.

Are you sure it's a gatso and not truvelo with it's filter missing?

Homer - it's a Gatso - no doubt, from the road markings ( dragons teeth) to the shape and position.
Gatso need the long markings on the road - truvelos only use 3 lines ( OH and the grid before)
Truvellos face the driver , this one is on the pavement , on the passenger side as you pass it.So it would normally take a photo of the rear of the car.

Shape - truvellos use round lenses - all windows on this one are rectangular.
(subtle hint - truvello cams have "truvello" written on them, not being sarcastic)

This one didnt have a name.No truvello or anything else.

Nothing to worry about - I quite enjoy setting these off on purpose - if you time it just right Charlie Chav going the other way thinks that he's been flashed. At the moment (well, on Sunday), there's one on Hills Road in Cambridge.

Sorry Homer if i offended - first time i've even seen one of these things flash.
The bit about vans does bother me, even if it gets a negative speed - one reason why i tend to go past them about 5 mph below in van ( hitop transit)
On te comical side - if set to record speed away from camera- what would my nip say - exceeding the negative speed limit.

Thinking aloud ( with daft thoughts) , at a negative speed i might be that safe (since slower = safer , in scamerati parlance) that i might be able to claim £60 from them .No - i dont think so - ah well nice thought.

Anyway - does the fact that it flashed me in wrong direction negate its type approval??

It's the dummy ones, i.e. those with no camera which flash approaching vehicles. Or so I am led to believe.

The live ones can get false readings from vans (and caravans) due to the panels vibrating. 5mph below th elimit is not enough to escape these errors. Just make sure you get the pictures and check against the road markings if you get a ticket. Plenty of people have had speeds recorded at double or more of their actual speed.
