Just to be serious for a minute, (sorry). But I've never understood why power stations can't use the excess heat from condensing steam after passing through the turbines.
It's all over the place actually. Try googling "combined heat and power" (CHP).
Know what you mean Paul, we (at work)actually run one of these installations to provide our electricity but the "maintenance" is done under contract from elsewhere because it's not our main concern, although I think it should be.
Many small units like ours over the nation do make a difference, but just imagine if it were applied to every power station with excess heat being sold also! Surely it's a crime in these "ECO" consious days to waste so much energy to atmosphere.
It just annoys me that the people who could make the BIGGEST impact in this field (i.e. the power stations) are the same ones who are telling us to be more "efficient". ......
Mmm hang on, not quite true that though Paul is it?, the Generator co's are now a private companies and the government cannot therefore direct them as when it was the CEGB. ........Pitty! profit now must come before all, including forward planning. but you catch my drift.
How DO we get what is now a private company to act in the future interests of the nation?
