Road safety training
13 June 2004

I agree with most of what Grem says, except for the suggestion that fatalities would drop if drivers were "trained" like bus drivers.

Not only are most bus drivers just as irresponsible as car drivers, after all they only become bus drivers because they actually enjoy driving, but this promotes the myth put about by the likes of the ABD that training is some kind of substitute for traffic laws.

Training is a red herring, the only training drivers need is how to stick to speed limits. It makes me sick that extreme motoring nutters claim to be responsible because they`ve got an IAM Gold Star or whatever, no doubt gained by driving down country lanes at ludicrous speeds, while people like my niece who genuinely needs a car (because of the appalling lack of public transport) fail their test for "not making progress", ie doing 20 in a 30 limit.

What these training enthusiasts and examiners need to understand is that if all the cars that struck pedestrians were sticking to 20mph, 90 per cent of those pedestrians would survive. If only all cars were mechanically restricted to say 25mph, we could probably abolish all driving tests and still see a reduction in deaths.

Cycleman (Oh I thought so!)

Er, a word of caution about this "forum"

I suspect many of the postings are made by pro-car campaigners with tongue in cheek. The posting by "cycleman" sounds like one of those...
