How will that work?

say the first bus gets stuck and stops, for whatever reason. Will all the other buses behind then stop, as they have to be a set distance/time apart.

I have been i Bham city centre and have been glad to see two buses at the same time as the first one was full.

Quote:
Traffic lights will change to green if they are late or stay on red for a few seconds if they are getting too close together.

The drivers will be able to see on a dashboard screen how close other buses are to them on their route

What about other road users?

Or if you have two bus routes that cross at right angles to each other on a cross roads, and both buses's are late or running a head of time.

Buses bunch up because they stop for passengers.
If a bus stops at every stop to pick up a few passengers and, as a result, stops for several minutes at a time, it won't take long for the other buses to catch it up - and then you have the classic two or three-bus situation.

Easy to see how it happens - difficult to see what to do about it

Cheers
Peter

I quite liked this comment:
Quote:
Conductors on the streets will be linked to the information and can warn drivers of problems.

I thought they had gotten rid of conductors way back - all one man buses now. :D

Theres a bus stop out side my house. Looked out of the window to see a buss approaching it the other day. The only person on was driving. There was no one at the bus stop. He stopped, no one got on or off (obviously) and he drove off. Talk about unnessasary journies. T2000 practilcy explode if they think I might go for a drive in my car, but no passengers on a bus is ok. nice.

A while ago I saw on The Big Breakfast(yes that long ago) that a hugely expensive study was commisioned to find out exactly why busses came in multiple - and it's conclusions were stating the bleeding obvious! Bus 1 gets delayed by an awkward passenger. More people then normal gather at the stops down the line, so takes bus 1 longer to process them. Ends up getting some of bus 2's passengers. Therefore bus 2 has fewer passengers to get on and off, but bus 1 is getting even more delayed picking up both it's own passengers and those of bus 2. Bus 2 catches up. They then yo-yo at each stop.

Having real-time information about your bus' progress has got to be a good thing though!

YEP - but if they can do it for busses - how long before some bright spark applies the idea to cars - this idea has all the hallmarks of a government test rig for satelite info from /possibly to cars --
Add this to charging and the ISA experiements and i get worried.
