When going through the Hatfield tunnel on the A1, northbound on my way home the other day I noticed that the lighting in it seems a little odd. For the first hundred metres or so the lights are very orange, after which it switches to a more 'normal' white light through to the end of the tunnel.

Personally I find the orange lighting quite a distraction. I was just wondering if anyone knew why the lights were set up this way?

Have to confess I do not know. Driven through a lot of tunnels here and abroad - always encountered a more or less "diffused "white lighting which serves purpose adequately.

I'd always thought it was to give your eyes time to adapt to the brighter lighting in the centre of the tunnel when driving at night, though this doesn't explain why there isn't a similar orange-lit stretch at the end of the tunnel to give your eyes a similar chance to adjust back to the lower lighting levels once you leave the tunnel...

Hmm, funny you should mention that. Driving through it again today I noticed that there is actually a small stretch of orange at the end of the tunnel. If I'd been thinking about it I'd have taken note of the lighting in the southbound tunnel as well, but it didn't cross my mind at 6am this morning.

(edit: spelling)

Swiss, Italian and Fench ones have a graduated diffused lighting at each end of the really long tunnels - Gotthardt...Mont Blanc for example. Think has to do with attuning eyes and then not dazzling in the middle. You also have to keep lights on dipped too - and switch off engine should there be jam in there. :yikes:
