Self-Defence In Cars

(Mon 19 Sep 05)

According to stolen vehicle recovery company TRACKER many drivers feel so unsafe on Britain's roads that they carry some form of self-defence in their vehicle. TRACKER surveyed motorists who had spent more than £15,000 on a new car in the past 12 months about their views on car safety and found that more than a fifth admitted to having a safety device.

The most popular form of self-defence was a personal alarm, carried by 9% of drivers, while 6% admitted to carrying a club, bat or hammer. 4% of respondents said they kept a knife to hand and the same number said they had a self-defence spray stored in their car. Most alarmingly, 1.5% of those surveyed claimed they kept a firearm in their car for defence.

Apparently thats why American drivers are polite, you just never know who's got a gun and willing to shoot.

Don't carry anything myself, but always lock the doors and don't rebuke other drivers no matter what they have done. Still I once had a TNT driver chase after me gesticulating that I should pull over. Thing is, I hadn't done anything wrong, it was all because he thought I was in the wrong lane, but I wasn't. No problem he merged in and I didn't make eye contact, or flash, or sound the horn. In fact it's not unusual for people to get it wrong at this roundabout(M62W to M606 - ask Homer!) so I was well prepared to let him merge and thought no more about it until he pulls alongside. Very scary.

I keep a wheel brace, a can of Finilec (tyre repair/inflator), a gadget for removing wheel trims, a fire extinguisher.... why would I want to carry anything for self defence?
I have never been threatened in my car, but years ago on Blackpool prom, a flatbacked Transit joined the traffic from a side road somewhat ambitiously as I passed, and I had to swerve to avoid him running into the side of me. He then followed me to my destination and started a scene - apparently because my pillion passenger had shown him a hand gesture - akin to shaking a bottle of pop!! I remarked that the dents and scratches on his well used vehicle must have been the result of contact with drivers who were not so quick at reacting to his style of driving as myself, and invited him to call the police and make a complaint about my pillion - at which point he backed down and stormed off with wheels spinning!

Not the few I am familiar with! :o

Once saw a sign on the bumper of a MkIII Cortina, with raised suspension, and flame paint job.

"Dont laugh at my car - your daughter might be the one in the back seat!"

as there tends to be an assortment of hammers, crowbars and sucklike tools of the trade bouncing around my van there's little point carrying anything specifically for defence.

although good tip for your wives & girlfrieds- CS gas is illegal to have in your handbag but deep heat isn't. never know when you might need an effective anti irritant!
