Had to laugh at this one. Got some truth in it I suspect.
I wonder what the effect of two cars and three motorcycles has....
Not to mention, the trailer, fridge and a some old furniture...(just kidding)

(Thu 10 Nov 05)

A survey of UK estate agents reveals that an unsightly car parked next door can knock thousands off your house price. It's likely to wipe an averge of 5.5% - equivalent to £10,170 - off the the average UK house price of £184,924.

The results, compiled by Network Q, also shows that a banger doesn't have to be parked next door to affect your house price - it can knock 4% off the value of nearby residential properties. Even worse, if you are the owner of the car in question, estate agents say it may prevent many buyers from even looking at your house, and knock off 8% of the true value.

Network Q also asked 1600 UK homeowners about their views on seeing an old banger when viewing a neighbouring house. 35% would refuse to even bid in the first place and another 37% would place a lower bid because of it.

The estate agents revealed that one client hid his car and borrowed a friend's newer car to help make a sale. Smart homes neighbouring a teenage repair fanatic couldn't be sold, while one house had five old cars parked in the driveway and had its value reduced by 25%. Caravans and mobile homes also contribute to lowering the value of surrounding houses.

'A person with a poorly maintained or shabby car can give off all the wrong signals to someone looking at their home or a neighbouring property," said Network Q's Richard Hughes. "It also goes to show that sometimes a quick and easy sale is sometimes out of your own hands.

"If your car is on its last legs, upgrade to a newer model and you'll not only improve your driving pleasure, but as these findings prove, have the peace of mind that you'll save yourself a fortune when it comes to selling your house."

With me, it's caravans or white builder's vans in the drive next door or in the road outside that kill the interest.

I am looking at property at the moment and, being a motoring enthusiast, I am interested in garage space. Almost nobody seems to keep cars in their garages which are generally full of junk, in one case so much that I couldn't get in to measure up!

MAybe you could do a deal.....you park your car on his drive while the people come to view. Then you promise not to rent it to students..

Well the family car is 5 years old, my bike is 30 years old, and the old lady's bike is 46 years old.....so I guess we are the ones letting the side down in our street

On a slightly more serious note, judging somebody by what they drive (or ride) is for stuck up arseholes who don't deserve the acolade of being pissed on even if they are on fire!

House purchasers are a pathetically shallow bunch though. If they don't like your decor then they'll go somewhere else even if all the other boxes are ticked. I don't look at things like that but others seem to. Estate agents do grumble about cars being parked. I have a large yard that would easily take 6 cars but apparently it isn't much of a selling point as buyers want lawns, decking and other rubbish they've seen on TV.

Why are we even giving air time to this? Network Q sell cars, people are keeping cars longer because their houses are worth less money and they do not feel rich, not the other way round.

A nice move to try and drum up business.

If it does become a problem, save yourself some money - hire a nice new model and leave it on your neighbours drive when people come to view!

I wouldn't be put off by the type of car - only if it had FLUFFY DICE hanging in the window, or a National Trust membership sticker!
...oh and GREENPEACE!!

The house i currently have had 2 old wrecks ( a capri and sierra, i think) sitting out at the back when i went to view, which was re-inforced by a HUGE amount of clutter inside. fortunately i saw past the mess and got myself a decent reduction on the asking price :)

So what you are trying to say is that they have a vested interest in proving their case through "independant" statistics.......now let me see, where have I heard that one already....

Anyhow I hope it raised a smile... :D

It's obviously not something new.

The leeshold terms on our property ban the keeping of caravans or untaxed/unlicenced/unroadworthy cars on the property.

I'm sure that yours will be classic fluffy dice, and therefore not objectionable.

In the case of a Capri, I would be prepared to accept that they had probably been factory fitted, and remained in the vehicle since new!
However, I'm not thinking of moving just yet - next door has a FREELANDER on the driveway - if THAT does'nt depress the house prices around me....!
