Chancellor Gordon Brown has announced a freeze on fuel duty in his pre-budget speech to the Commons on Thursday.

Who's going to pay for the extra duty he's going to charge the oil companies then??

And transpot ( no typo) 2000 comes up with another gem

We are concerned that although Britain leads the world in rhetoric about climate change it often fails in practical action

It's maybe a good thing that the government have imposed windfall taxes on oil companies. here's why:

The statement that oil is about to run out is a bare faced lie, it is similar to the climate change scare tactics to make us all accept paying more for less. Peak oil predictions keep moving forward and always seem to be predicted "in just a few years" but never actually happen. Peak oil is a point where we are using more than we can extract, not that we are running out. The oil companies are using this scare to raise the prices and thus make more profit.

Most of our supply problems are to do with the oil coming from politically unstable areas and wars zones.

Regards

Andrew

Andy - i hear your message - try this idea, and its only an idea to think about .
If basic fuel price rises then the amount of duty etc rises , so the Exchequer wins.
He has seen that now he (brown ) is public enemy no 1 as far as the motorist is concerned and the oil comp[anies are looking clean - they can at present say that the high pump price is in a lot of ways due to the tax/duty ( call it what you like) .
Now if the govt is making the oil companies the bad guy - the oil companies pass the rise onto the motorist, brown gets his share of the extra , the oil companies get the blame ---(is this an avenue for preparation for pricing - don't underestimate old goldie brown.)
