Please have a look at this roughly drawn picture which shows a section of the M54 between J5 and J6. The 'on' sliproad effectively creates a third lane between the two juntions before it ends at the 'off' sliproad to teh next junction. The same thing is repeated on the other side.

What is the status of the section of road marked with a ?

My sons, mates driving instructor claims it is actually an 'A' road and took him along there during a lesson (he is a 'L' driver)
As far as I can tell, all of the signs leading on to the slip roads from the roundabouts at each junction are motorway blue ones and clearly identify the road as the M54!
Am I mistaken? Surely there cannot be such a configuration, A road and M-way all in one?

Definitely a motorway. Once you have passed the "Start of Motorway" sign, like the one below, motorway regs apply.

There are loads of sections like this along the M60.

Edit: and that is post #2000 :D

I agree. Blue signs doth a motorway make!

Up here in our neck of the woods we even have a bit of single carriageway motorway. I always make a point of doing 70 along it!

Yep, twas what I thought, thanks.
So how do we expect new drivers to be aware of basic road regulations if driving instructors aren't?

Are you talking about the A601(M) from M6 J35 towards Over Kellett? HTF do you get up to 70 on that piddling little bit of road? If, OTOH you mean the A6144(M), then go for it, you won't have much longer since there are plans to downgrade it to all-purpose road with a 40 limit (IIRC).

Yes

It is possible, I assure you, though you do need a fairly reasonable power to weight ratio...

Blue signs generally DO make a motorway, but there is always the
A102(M), an M-class A-road with M-class restrictions (learners, bikes under 50cc etc) and blue signs but a 50 limit which in places reduces to 40.

That hasn't been a motorway for several years now. See:

http://www.pathetic.org.uk/motorways/a102m-ecr.shtml

And an Axxx(M) certainly is a motorway in all respects - try, for example, the A74(M) between Gretna and Abington.
