We've got a thread for visitors to post information about themselves: http://www.safespeed.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=100

The idea of the thread is considerably weakened when discussions break out - as they are right now. I think we need to find a formula to prevent this happening.

Should I post a rule: "no replies in the thread'?

Or any other ideas?

i did wonder about that when i signed off with 'any questions?' !...

hard to stop it happening.... not sure where such tangents should go.. especially when they're of a social rather than a SS nature.

go pruning by all means!

Thanks, but I hate to prune. In fact I'm not going to prune.

I just want to pre-empt future events, but I'm unsure about the best way.

IMO, you should just split the conversation part of the thread and move it to a more suitable home. You can still leave the "hi, here's who I am" parts where they are.

Yes, I see no problem with that.

You could put the thread in its own sub-forum which would enable you to prevent anyone replying in it.

Are you suggesting a special forum, with no 'reply' rights given to users?

So each person who wished to post details would start a thread, containing a single post? In which case wouldn't it be rather difficult to read?

Umm, no, wouldn't work that, would it? Sorry, my brain seems a bit cross-wired today. I'll get me coat

Surely Paul you simply lock the "about our visitors" thread as and when you create it (as a sticky) and at the same time put an "ice breaker - introduce yourself here" sticky - unlocked - along side it?

As for this one, just recreate a new thread "about our visitors" with a clone of the first post in the current thread, lock the new one, rename the present thread in question (along with an edit to something very simple in your opening post)?
