As we know, George Monbiot isn't exactly our favourite pundit around here. But I found a lot to agree with in his piece in today's Guardian:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/comment/story ... 55,00.html

Quote:
There will be no dramatic developments. We will not step out of our homes one morning to discover that the state, or our boss, or our insurance company, knows everything about us. But, if the muted response to the ID card is anything to go by, we will gradually submit, in the name of our own protection, to the demands of the machine. And it will not then require a tyrannical new government to deprive us of our freedom. Step by voluntary step, we will have given it up already.

Yes, I agree pretty well with what he says. How many people know that the ID card is RFID enabled?

is there anything in "the rules" about these cards that say you have to keep them out of an aluminiun foil wrapper? I've also got this nice steel business card holder ... that could be ideal for storing important voluntary-compulsory cards!

I’m not just concerned by essentially being tagged, I’m also concerned about exactly what information will be stored on these cards. Could these cards be used to find out exactly where a person is within the UK?

What do you think those security devices at the front of shops are? RFID readers. Sure they might not be compatible with the ID card's RFID system at the moment but if you were a shop wouldn't you want to make them compatible so you could monitor when a customer enters and leaves, which branch/es they shop at, link this using your credit card (if they can) or RFID readers at the checkout and they can tell what you buy.

I should think that at very least each card would have an easily available serial number.

I didn't realise ID cards would have RFID in them. I don't really mind the idea of an optional ID card, but I refuse to carry anything with RFID around with me.

Cards should fit quite easily in a microwave oven, terrible accident, 30 seconds on high, oh dear.

Moonbigot usually writes dross, but this is excellent. The economy of phrase makes it creepy to read, let alone think about...almost like Edgar Allen Poe.

I've got a dinky little alpha source in my prep-room that should fry the chip nicely. Or a couple of minutes on the target plate of our Van Der Graaf...("Sorry, Officer! I think it's been struck by lightning...").

"Moonbigot usually writes dross,"
"but this is excellent."

Sometimes to move on, you have to appreciate the views of others.

Cherry picking is easy.

Understanding others views is not.

Most new car PLIPs have RFID built in. Thats how the immobiliser work. It reads the key head from a coil built around the key barrel. Some cars with keyless remote entry also use a more powerful system that can be read at a range of several feet.

Sounds like there's a market opportunity  here for Farady cage mesh ID card holders. Purely to protect them from lightning strikes of course
