WHY are they talking about 1st of March as the first day of Spring?

Excuse me, but the first day of Spring is the vernal equinox - about 21st March. See: http://www.equinox-and-solstice.com/htm ... uinox.html

The current METAR at EGCC is

EGCC 012250Z 17004KT 140V200 9999 SCT040 M02/M04 Q1002

It's only going to get colder.

The seasons are widely regarded as consisting of:

Spring: March, April, May
Summer: June, July, August
Autumn: September, October, November
Winter: December, January, February

Given the typical kind of weather, this seems more logical than not beginning summer until the days have started to shorten again.

Really? I've never heard such a thing in my life! Or at least, not until today.

This Wikipedia page describes this as the "Meteorological" range of the seasons:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seasons#Reckoning

It seems daft starting Summer three days before Midsummer's Day :o

Astronomically speaking:

1st day of spring 21 Mar - vernal equinox
1st day of summer 21 June - summer solstice
1st day of autumn 21 Sept - autumnal equinox
1st day of winter 21 Dec - winter solstice

I've noticed this in the past few years. I guess, along with the dumbing down of everything else, it no doubt makes it easier for the idiots of this world to understand.

And, as I jumped on the bike at 05.00 this morning, with the temperature (adjusted for speed and windchill) somewhere around -15, the thought most definitely NOT on my mind (astronomically or otherwise) was "it's the first day of spring".

No doubt supported by some recent mild winters.
Here in Cumbria we have not had persistant snow on lower slopes for some years. My eight year old (nine this month) has yet to be taken tobogganing!!! :(
