I use a 3/4 inch drive socket set once in a while and would like my own. But it would be an extravagance and at least £180 for a CK set and over £600 for a Britool an expensive one.

So second hand.

A are they easy to come by?

B from where?

and C I don't want to buy anything that has been nicked.

any thoughts?

I used to have a quality driver knocking about at work, left behind by a service engineer a few years ago - I'll see if I can find it tomorrow - it was a good one if I recall - it's a start if you like old tool stalls on markets and car bootsales!

You often pick up second-hand big stuff at steam fairs and classic car shows. There is also some Eastern European stuff that is quite nice (but a lot that is complete tat)! Generally if it's made by a company called "drop forged" or "chrome vanadium" it's probably lousy. I quite like Kamasa stuff - reasonable compromise between quality and cost. "King Dick" is a very good brand from the past, as is Gedore.

I got a set of Kamasa combination spanners and snapped both ends off the 1/2" one. I then used my dad's King Dick brand one on the same bolt and it was fine!

thanks for you input. Had a look in Machinemart today, they didn't have one. The trouble is I want a £300 socket set and only want to spend £90

£27 for a 3/4 inch drive, hmm. Looked a a Beta and it was £137. So checked out the £27 one and looked at the other ones. The 1/2 inch drive looked ok, a much as you can tell by looking at a picture on my laptop. So I rang them and they were going to ring me back, they haven't yet. I wanted to know how many feet of pipe I can use on the end of the ratchet before it slips/breaks. I have a foot of pipe on the end of my Britool 14 inch 1/2inch drive breaker bar (that cost £35) today and it's fine.

I need several feet of leverage to crack or tighten the bolts on the tractor back wheels and don't need skinned knuckles.
