Be careful at these roadworks, the first camera for the SPEC system is right above the 40mph sign so it's not easy to see as you approach. By the time you've slowed down you're well into the system :(

Did the accident have anything at all to do with anyone exceeding a speed limit?

And read about TRL595 which says that fixed speed cameras increase crashes in motorway road works by 55%. http://www.safespeed.org.uk/trl595.html

We're hear to promote and understand real safety not the joke scam that DfT is promoting - or should that be clinging to?

..but dixie's post is warning you so you can slow down in advance rather than be caught out by a less than obvious camera..

i dont think its promoting speeding through manned roadworks.

sorry about your colleague but i think you have the wrong end of the stick there.

if the cameras are there to encourage you to stick to the limit and protect the workforce, not just generate cash, then surely they should be obvious to road users.

and surely someone coming on an internet forum and making people more aware of the limit and the camera position is in fact likely to make it more effective.

I just thought I would add to this. I came through this section this morning. Where the camera is situated right above the 40mph sign there are no roadworks being carried out, all three lanes are clear, then after about ¼ to ½ a mile in there is the start of a contraflow system right on the M5/M6 junction and still no workmen. The work is actually being carried out on the M6 motorway (bridge section) further on.

Just as you enter the M5 you see the last other SPEC on the slip road. There’s no work being carried out on the M5.

If that's the first 40mph sign then it's gathering numberplates outside of the speed limit...?!

I've taken a video of this using my camera, I can't run it at work because of the admin settings. I'll have a look at home on Thursday. I can't be dead certain about position. It's on a gantry and may be set back a bit.

Well, it suggests that they might.

I'd rate it far more strongly than 'might'. It's a huge study - four times bigger than the one before (which remains the second biggest), and the finding is broad and consistent.

In fact, in terms of a brief and appropriate statement, I'll stand firm on the words that I chose.
