I pass a gatso on my way to work every day.

Just a curiosity thing, really. The road was resurfaced for about 1/4 mile along that stretch, so there are no road markings, and no lines for the camera.

If they did put the camera in and it was set off could a driver still get NIPped for that?

It'd be one of the rare kind of cameras that it'd be a shame to lose!

I would think a NIP would still go out. Firstly because anything of known length in the photos could be used to work out the distance the car went. Cat's eyes, kerbstones, distance between drain covers, they could even look up the dimensions of the car in the photos and go from there. Second reason I think they'd send the NIP is that there's some evidence that the photos aren't always checked beforehand anyway.
