As protests go, it spells out the sentiments of many motorists.
But police have failed to see the funny side after a saboteur started altering 'Speed Cameras' signs to read 'Greed Cameras'.
At least ten are believed to have been changed using home-made stickers in Colchester, Essex, over the past two months. The suspect is believed to be someone who has recently been caught by a camera.
One police officer said: 'We are treating it as an act of vandalism. If we catch whoever is responsible, we intend to throw the book at them.'
A spokesman for the Essex force commented: 'If we see anybody tampering with the signs, we will stop them and speak to them accordingly.'
But the saboteur has become a cult hero among drivers, many seeing him or her as a modern-day Robin Hood, cocking a snook at the authorities.
Builder John Lawrence, 43, said: 'Every time I see one of these signs has been altered, I have a good laugh. The Government and the police are making a tidy sum from these cameras.'
'Hilarious'
Laura Peters, 29, said: 'I think it's hilarious that somebody is going to all this effort to make their point.
'I got done by one of these cameras last year and it made me really angry because I was only just over the limit.'
Sheila Ranger, from the RAC Foundation, said: 'We wouldn't condone what this person is doing, but it seems quite harmless.
'It's questionable whether it is a matter for the police. There are more important things for officers to be doing.'
The Essex Safety Camera Partnership, which is run by local authorities, yesterday admitted it has more to worry about than the Colchester saboteur.
'Our biggest problem is the cameras themselves being attacked and set on fire,' said a spokesman.
'That's probably happened about six times in the county during the past month.'

Throw the book at them??
Don't make me f*cking laugh.....those wankers can't even manage to successfully nick a child abuser in Bedfont Lakes Country Park after he commits an offence in front of numerous witnesses....so how the f*ck are they going to get someone in to court for altering a few roadside signs?

It's not me!

Just hope Essex police find the time to catch the little scrote that broke into one of my friends cars on monday in southend while we (50 or more of us) were running in loops past it. Bastard

Could make an interesting case for a competent lawyer!

The "Gr" appears to be a "Sticker" rather than paint. Similar to those gooey stickers that clampers put on your windscren. These (presumably) are not considererd "Criminal damage" or "Vandelisim" or motorists could take the private clampers to court for such!

Nor is the "Modification" altering or obscuring the essential message (Such as altering a speed limit or other road sign) so there is no case for "Endangerment"

It is possible that there is actually no case to awnser (Unless the B'stards have sneaked in "Specific" laws to cover this sort of thing)

I guess we shall have to wait and see

We have a PCSO touring our village now in a car with "Community Police" on the bonnet.

She's a tiny little middle aged woman who couldn't catch a cold.

I'm very tempted to get a "Pretend" sticker to put over the word "Community"...

They (the police service in general, not Essex specifically, and certainly not - thankfully - a still fairly large percentage of the individual frontline officers trying to do a good job despite what their lords and masters are telling them to do) seem reasonably competent in dragging plenty of people into court for relatively minor (some might say non-existent) crimes - particularly where the target of the "crime" is the almightly safety camera system which must be protected at all costs no matter how that affects their ability to cut down on activity which genuinely affects the population at large, or how much damage it does to their public image and levels of respect...

I see the funny side! Honest!

I can think of worse forms of vandalism. I suppose if they cop him.. he will get community service.. cleaning up graffiti

But he used stickers - easy to remove and not paint... rather think he would not get the "book" thrown at him as such .. but maybe a telling off

You could go further and cover up a few choice letters of the word community (letters like o, m, m, i......) :D

Actually, the more I think about it the more I am sure that the Police have No (Or only a very short) leg to stand on!

Have *any* prosecutions ever been made against Green Sandelistas who put stickers on 4X4's saying "This vehicle dammages the enviroment" or whatever!

This is just the same thing! A Political protest!

If it was me and the police caught me I would go to a suitable forign embassy and claim assylum on grouds of persecution for political protest (Even if they turned me down it would make good press! )

Maybe I could go for the Iranians! I have certain, erm, "interests" that they might find usefull! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
